Smart!John Stories

Okay, maybe it's just me, but it seems like there aren't a lot of smart!John fics out there. Either he's too busy being whumped and in pain to do anything clever, or the a story is more focused on dorky, bumbling John, or dorky bumbling John and other, or dorky, bumbling team - which is all well and good, but not what I'm in the current mood for. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there are no stories where John does something clever. Those are exactly the stories I'm looking for, even if I have already read them. As I said, it's what I'm in a major mood for :)

Not Mensa John doing math things. I'm talking about John doing something clever, outsmarting the enemy, coming up with a solution that Rodney wasn't able to come up with - pretty much what we see him do in the show. Anyone know any stories? Gen only, please, of course ;)

On Another note, don't forget the spare some clicks for the babies. The frilled dragon thinks it's Peter Pan and is refusing to grow up. And he only has two more days!

Concur...........
I don't find a dorky Sheppard very entertaining or
likable......
He is NOT in my mind, a dork.....He might
have a few moments, but he would NOT be where he is
if he were that caliber. Sorry but that is just NOT
possible despite his run ins with higher echelon....
I realize it is interesting to see him when he is blowing steam, but not as a full time occupation....and same goes
for his team......
Levity is fine, but a long litany of it is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I read your pieces of ff because they had meat in them.
Would like to read more of something with meat in it....
It is also my feeling that most of the scripts in SGA were
light weight........
It is why they ran out of steam; nothing to hold on to.

Sometimes I think that, for some people, dork = dumb: at least where SGA fanfic and Sheppard are concerned. To me, Dork!Sheppard is the guy into racing toy cars and reading comic books, not someone who's incompetent. To make him a dork one does not also have to make him a bumbler or klutz.

I sometimes think dork/dumb Sheppard has eaten people's brains. I've come across comments, story reviews, episode reviews, etc where someone always tries to drop mention of "uh-oh, does Sheppard do something stupid again?" Which boggles me, because it's always his ideas that end up saving the day. It's what I love about his character - that he isn't there just to shoot things and look pretty, he's also smart, and uses his brain just as much as his P-90 to get the gang out of trouble.

It's why I get so utterly annoyed with stories when/if Sheppard's intelligence his belittled.

I guess you've already read "Significant Figures" by T'Pring over on ffnet. That is John being smart to save himself, but I think it shows how smart he can really be under great pressure. I think he's been shot in the belly and I know you don't really like that, but she doesn't make a huge deal out of it. It's one of my favorites, I think because it does show off his intelligence.

You know what I really hated? In First Contact (I think) where Rodney and Daniel made fun of John (could have been Mensa) like he was stupid and then Radek complained he didn't know if he could "dumb it down" enough for John to understand. I just wanted to pop all of them.

And I hate you because now I find myself trying to think of a story idea that has John saving the day with some really smart idea. Not being smart myself, it's not really coming along very well (I definitely couldn't even knock on Mensa's door - if they have one).

I just finished reading it. He was shot in the chest, wasn't he? And wearing kevlar, so it didn't penetrate but caused his lung to collapse.

I haven't seen First Contact, yet, but I've heard the complaints. I think katstale did a tag where Daniel realizes John's intelligence, but I had hoped there would be more stories centered around Rodney coming to realize that John is smart. I think it's why I bristle so much when John ignores his own health for no reason, or when Rodney calls John a moron or idiot. John is smart, we've seen him being smart, but it doesn't seem to get acknowledged enough in fanfic beyond him being a math wiz.

Heh, you don't have to write John as Mensa clever, just clever ;). Have him trick some bad guys or figure out how to fix the 'jumper or some weapon by switching a few crystals. I'd like to write a clever!John story myself, but I'm currently lacking the motivation to write anything SGA :P I'm barely able to scrape up enough motivation to write my original story. It's driving me nuts :S.

I think you're talking about her new one, which I just read and also showed John in a good light intelligence-wise. Significant Figures is an older one and if I do this right is found at Significant Figures (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3889186/1/Significant_Figures).

And this is me poking your motivation - poke! poke! jab! Yeah, I know, it isn't that easy. Can't say I didn't try though. I have motivation right now, just not really enough time.

Yes, he's wounded and running to lure bad guys away from Rodney, leaving clues for his team to find him along the way. I love that!!
