Cat Update

So... I didn't adopt the cat. But he was adopted so that's a good thing. And though I am a teeny-tiny bit sad about it, overall I feel it to be the right decision. Our house is pretty crowded as is with three cats, five dogs plus family living with us for the time being and their two cat-chasing dogs (which has reduced the number of cat litter boxes to one since the cats can't go into the basement). But the overall deciding factor was the fact that my room - the only place in the house where I would have been able to keep the cat until he acclimated - is the only room where I can keep both the cat litter and the cat food. My sister dislikes cats and my mom's room is the "dog" room, and the basement is off limits what with the cat-chasing dogs living in it. The cats need to be able to get into my room, not just for the food and litter box but also because it's the room where they feel the safests, especially where my cat Roxy is concerned, who's skittish and barely leaves my room these days.

But even had we free run of the basement to keep the cat until he felt comfortable, I still don't think I would have gotten him. I'm too much of a cat lady as is what with my three indoors and five ferals. That I practiced such self-restraint has actually brought me quite a bit of relief. I wasn't kidding when I said I worry about becoming a cat lady - specifically a cat hoarder - but thise proves that, yes, I do have self-control after all, that I'm not the kind of person to bring a cat in at the drop of a hat, I do know when and where to draw the line.

Although, on the other hand, should this ever happen again in which I come across a cat I must have - screw self-control, I'm getting it. I've never agonized this much over getting an animal and I'm not going to agonize over one a second time, I'm just going to get it.

I agree
I think you have sufficient cats to look after now...and given the living situation you describe, it would make it very difficult

I would like to get another cat someday (simply because if we can have five dogs I can have four cats ;)), but now is most definitely not the time.

Awwww. I'm sorry you didn't get to add to your family, but at least the kitty got her forever home somewhere.

*hugs*

Yeah, I was a little sad but overall I don't regret it. Plus our shelter is really good about getting animals adopted out, fast. I had no doubt a cat that sweet would find a home soon ;)

I would say that it worked out for the best and the cat did get adopted so that is a win, win thing. As for the chaos that must go on in the house, you should be nominated for sainthood!

:D

It hasn't been too bad, just a little crowded at times. I would like to get another cat (I've always wanted a white one) so I still hope to get one someday, but I'm willing to wait ;)

I'm not sure what I'll do when my kitty finally goes. If I do get another cat, it will definitely be an adoption of a shelter pet. While kittens are cute, I don't have time to train it not to destroy the house and adult cats so need adoption to save them.

I went to a cat shelter to drop off food once and OMG, it was tough not to leave with one, but my wallet was going "You can't afford another one!!!" and that stopped me. Oh, they were so adorable, even the stand offish one.

I'm really surprised I've been working at the shelter for nearly two years and it was only recently I was tempted to bring home a cat. But if I do finally cave it would have to be a young cat for me since most of the adult cats aren't too keen about their fellow cats, but the young ones are still pretty malleable in that regard.

That said, I would rather get a tween than a kitten. For one, tweens are cheaper. For another like you said, there's all that training to consider :/

Well, good the cat got adopted - hopefully it's his forever home. :)

Ee gads - I can see why you didn't adopt him at the time - sounds like your house is overflowing with extra critters and people right now.

I may foster one cat at a time when I move and will have a 2nd bathroom I can keep them in. I am hoping to toilet train Jack & Daniel soon, so I won't have to worry about litter boxes. :-p
