AUs and I
I know I've talked about it before, but mostly in response to comments, so thought I would explain it more thoroughly.
I'm very black and white when it comes to canon and writing fanfic. If it's not in the show, something they haven't touched on, something they have yet to do, or is the kind of show they will never do that something in, then I can't bring myself to write it. It's why I have little love for most of my CSI:NY fics except for two - I feel them too far off canon.
I got into fanfiction because I love reading extensions of my favorites shows (show-based published novels, for example), plus I loved the idea of being able to do my own "episodes," as it were. So anything not canon (well, close to canon, not exactly canon since that isn't really possible) - namely AUs and crossovers - I ignored. I won't go into, again, my dislike for all things slash and het romance, but them being non-canon is just one reason (probably one of the bigger reasons) I don't like them.
Stargate Atlantis, however - being a spin-off of a show that deals with parallel universes all the time - allowed me to develope not only a tolerance for AUs, but an appreciation for them as well. Any other fandom - like CSI:NY and Numbers - I wouldn't touch AUs with a ten foot pole.
That still leaves the issue of writing AUs in SGA. Though the stargate fandom has opened wide the door to AUs, I still feel very uncomfortable about writing them since I'm all about canon. And the further away the AU is from canon, the more uncomfortable I get.
For example: Dream Eater, thus far, is the only favorite AU I've written, and one I feel completely comfortable with since there was little alteration (at least, in my opinion) from the real SGA universe. The dragon-rider AU that many of you have expressed an interest in I'm having a hard time sticking with. So though I will try to stick with it, I can not make any promises that I will.
As for the AU I created for No Matter Where You Go, There You Are, I am working on that one in terms of developing the plot even as we speak. I feel it slightly more closer to a possible SG universe than the dragon-rider AU, so am having less difficulty with it.
So there you have it: why I have such a hard time writing AUs.
As for cross-overs - I'm okay with fusions, but am still on the fence about combining two different shows. Supernatural and SGA I can almost see happening. SGA and Numbers or CSI:NY I just can't swallow.
