Title: A Wing and a Prayer
Rating: PG-13 for language, mentions of off-screen torture, but nothing explicit.
Characters: Everyone
Summary: An expedition of humans and their dragon companions travel to the Pegasus Galaxy in search of Atlantis. There they discover a people bonded to telepathic griffins, and that before the expedition can find the lost city they must first earn the right to become its new caretakers. When Major Sheppard is taken and returned with a piece of his memory missing, what began as a search for the city of the Ancients becomes a race against time and an enemy that is the very definition of being more than they seem.
A/N: Written for SGA Big Bang 2009. Just adding it to my journal archive, which can be accessed by clicking on "fanfiction" or "stargate atlantis" in tags.
A Wing and a Prayer
A/N 2: Many people have commented on how they were hesitant to read this due to the fantasy aspects - which is totally understandable (I swear, I'm not complaining. I was expecting this and am pleased and surprised to see so many giving it a chance). Really, though, I don't consider this story all that fantasy except for the dragons and griffins. There's no magic, no wizards and the like. It's still, at it's core, very much sci-fi, just with a very like dusting of fantasy.

The dragons and griffins are part of the story as a whole and not some random bolt on put in there because "SG:A would be cool if it had Dragons"
I like the relationships between the Chars and their bonded companions it is obvious both parties are themselves whilst also being together. Plus both parties are constructive together rather than one doing all teh work and teh other being the noble steed.
If you ever do a sequel/prequel let me know I am keen to know more

Date: 2009-11-25 10:26 pm (UTC)From:Thank you :D Half the fun, as well as half the stress, was making the dragons fit without being out-of-place but, as you said, being more than just the "noble steeds."
I would like to do... not so much a sequel as tags, exploring various episodes with the addition of the dragons as well as coming up with new adventures. For example, what becomes of Ford's dragon when Ford ends up on the enzyme? Does he go with Ford? Does she go back to earth? It'll be fun to explore those scenarios in this 'verse.

Date: 2009-11-29 10:23 pm (UTC)From:Perhaps, to make the situation more powerful you could have the invading wraith severly and debilitatingly injur Ford's dragon or even Kill it. Ford attempting to save it getting hitched to the wraith, etc... This would then be a more compelling spring board for his reaction post waking up, the paranoia of the enzyme plus the grief over his loss making him crazy plus it would seriously make his reasoning behind his action in "lost boys" an bit more comprehendable. Why not take his revenge to the front door of the people who made him suffer his deep loss.
