In that I'm once again at war with myself - to get the next Dresden Files book or not? It's Dresden, I love Dresden to bits, always look forward to the next book in the series. Normally, there would be no hesitation in me getting the next book.
The hesitation now? Well, all I will say is that the story involves a particular trope that I am really, really not a fan of. So much so that the thought of reading the latest book - no matter how good I know it's going to be - makes me squirm.
It's a funny thing, really, how bad this trope bugs me. It's not that it's a bad trope, and it's definitely not because I think Butcher won't handle it well. I just don't like it. And because I don't like it, I can't bring myself to buy the next book. A part of me wants to wait until the next book comes out, to have it ready so that I can immediately move on to it when I finally get around to reading this book. Another, smaller part wants to get the book and make myself read, because it'll probably be like with the movie Avatar in that I end up really enjoying it despite this particular trope.
At the extreme moment, I'm at least going to wait until next month to get it. Hopefully by then I'll want to read it, but for now felt it prudent to wait. I'm almost finished with the edits to my original fic and I don't want reading Dresden Files to shift my perceptions of my own story (which was the case while writing said original fic. I was reading last years Dresden novel at the same time, and I kept getting discouraged because I kept comparing my work to Butcher's, which of course is a big, fat no-no). I also need to buy shoes. Mine are starting to get a little ragged :P.
But all the above aside, if by next month I'm still dithering on getting this years Dresden Files, I may just wait until next year. Or get it for my birthday or Christmas or something. I honestly hope I manage to work up the desire, soon, because I miss reading about Harry.
