Robin McKinley's early stuff was quite good but I don't like what she writes now. I'll have to check out Barbara Hambly, she wrote some good Star Wars books.
Have you tried The Elvenbane by Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton? I loved the first book, liked the second and the third was quite WTH? Unfortunately book four hasn't been released as Ms Norton passed away.
