The Six Characters of John Sheppard

The six fanfic characterizations of John Sheppard.
Flirty, horny, or pervert - We have plenty of evidence to know Sheppard is a flirt, and plenty for writers to use backing up their view of him being a little too driven by his libido. I'm not a fan of this type of characterization. Though it can be funny, I think a lot of writers tend to take it too far, making him possibly too horny and less likeable because of it. Pervert Sheppard is just *shudders* ew! But that's more of a kink thing having nothing to do with cannon.
The Village idiot/ big goof - Completely uncanon and more the characterization type used by McKay fans/Shep haters. Canon has made it obvious that, though an occasional dork, Sheppard is anything but an idiot. Sheppard comes up with the life-saving schemes and McKay makes them happen. But we see plenty to know that he's not the stoic, all knowing hero and that even he has fallibility. But that does not make him an idiot, just a goof.
Stubborn, stubborn man - Canon but many tend to take it a bit too far, mostly when it comes to health matters. Sheppard cares about his own well being - episodes like Aurora and The Long Good-bye show as much (He hesitates about going into the pod and letting Thalen take him over). I believe Sheppard might disregard his own well-being during a crisis. However, he wouldn't during down time. Health matters aside, the guy just doesn't give up, and that's totally canon.
Dark and dangerous with a dark past - I personally find this to be very non-cannon, more of a what-if fetish. Though dark-side Sheppard with a violent streak is fascinating, the extent some take it causes it to conflict too much with his loyal and compassionate side. I mean, he had a chance to kill Kolya but let him go. That doesn't exactly scream "closet sociopath". As for dark pasts, some are plausible, most are not. Though they are interesting, the kinds of pasts given to Sheppard - the ones full of abuse and pain - would have made him a totally different man from what we see on the show.
Snarktastic - Totally canon. When unsure how to handle Sheppard's character, go for snark with a bit of attitude because the episodes give us plenty of it.
Quiet and Compassionate - This is my personal favorite. The kind and loyal Sheppard, the guy who gave Kolya a second chance and tried to again. The guy who would do anything for anyone. The guy who found a family on Atlantis and fights to keep them safe.
