John and Pregnant Teyla
Nov. 6th, 2010 02:34 pmI was Watching Quarantine last night because Sheppard climbing a wall - *drools copiously* It got me thinking for a moment about the whole kerfuffle way back when after John had chewed Teyla a new one for not telling him she was pregnant and the outrage that followed. "Poor woobie Teyla picked on by big mean Sheppard" and "Pregnant women can to contribute to a battle!" It was a very frustrating time in fandom. I was one of those who had sided with Sheppard, but all I was seeing was memes and stories siding with Teyla.
But what really got to me during that time was when it turned out Sheppard had a point after all and people still felt he was in the wrong. Granted, yes, his reaction was harsh, but given the circumstances at the time I can understand why (things are going to crap and, suddenly, Teyla drops yet another bomb on him). But Teyla goes from wanting to kick butt and take names despite now being responsible for this new life growing in her body, to "Wait a minute, this kid and I could very well be the last of my people. I almost lost him fighting a wraith queen. I can't risk him!" Which, duh! But Sheppard was still being portrayed as the inconsiderate sexist jerk who had to be put in his place in a lot of fic even after this fact.
Though I miss the show like crazy, one thing I don't miss is new episodes that become fodder for people looking to woobify or demonize a character.
