How Ironic
Nov. 16th, 2010 10:42 pmI've been running into a bit of an interesting situation as of late. You all pretty much know how I feel about labels, warnings, and letting a reader know what they're getting into. I've run into quite a few stories that were strictly slash or rape or whatever with no warnings for it what so ever.
But lately, I seem to be running into the flip side - stories labeled OT3 or pre-slash or A/B that. well, aren't. For example, there was a story I read that warned for OT3, but because it was rated PG I thought I'd give it a skim and stop at the OT3 moment.
Except, when read with gen goggles on, there was no OT3 moment. Yes, someone could see it that way if they wanted, but the way it was written, and due to the situation, it was just as easy to read it as strictly gen. And I read another story that pretty much did the same thing. Though it was labeled as alluding to pre-slash and pre-het, it could just as easily be read as strictly friendship.
It kind of reminds me of those stories where the author states loud and clear that this fic isn't slash, yet the story is so smarmy it feels one kiss away from being slash.
