My brother hooked my laptop up with a wireless card, and because it's my laptop that I use for writing I was certain that I wouldn't get anything done thanks to the new shiny distraction within easy reach.
Instead, I'm getting a ton of things done. Probably more done than when I didn't have a wireless card.
I think this is for two reasons.
1. Where fanfic writing is concerned, for me, fanfic inspires fanfic, as well as motivates fanfic. So I'm able to read fic, switch over to whatever I'm writing, then switch back to fic when my motivation is lagging.
2. Which leads to the second thing. I sometimes need to take little tiny breaks while writing in order to hash out the next part in my head. This is usually where I falter in my writing, because I either get distracted by my wandering thoughts or I get sleepy and don't want to write anymore. Now I can just switch over to the Internet, read a few fic, look at a few pictures and keep my head in the game.
On the other hand, so far it's been beneficial where fanfic is concerned. I'm still a little worried where writing original fic is concerned since, well, fanfic doesn't exactly inspire original fic (it just makes me want to write fanfic), and it doesn't take much to discourage me out of writing where originals are concerned (ah, the fragile ego of a writer, how I loathe it). But since I'm editing an original and not writing one it hasn't really been a problem just yet, so we'll see.
