I've lived in Kansas the longest I've lived anywhere but today was the closest a tornado as ever come to our house. To say it was scary is an understatement. The thing was coming right down our street. Hail was pounding our house, winds were beating on everything, the sirens were going and my mom had the radio on and you could hear the tornado chaser guy going frantic... oi. Then the electricity goes out so all we hear is the hail and the sirens. We were gathered in the basement - us and all the pets (I had to carry my cat Roxy down, and she hates being carried). The rain was really coming down at an angle, getting through one of the basement windows. I kept pacing, and was so anxious my fingers went numb. I was just waiting for that freight train roar, or the sound of our roof ripping off. We eventually said a prayer, and it was after that that things finally started calming down.

The worst of the damage, at least for our house, was a few cracked windows. Talk about a blessing. A lot of people lost a few branches off their trees. One tree was even uprooted! And we heard someone's roof had been torn off. But all in all, not as bad as it could have been for our neighborhood. It was quite interesting, going from all that chaos to people out in the streets, taking walks to check out what damage was done. We sat outside with some of the dogs since it was too stuffy in the house with the A/C off. Inside we had to sit in the dark for a few hours but the electricity eventually came back on. I really didn't care if it came on sooner or later, I was just happy the storm was finally over.

It's hard to enjoy a good thunder shower in Kansas, it really is.

ETA: Our poor dog Jewel. She has back leg issues and had to practically slide down the stairs to get to the basement. But to our surprise, she didn't need any help getting back up the stairs :D

I'm glad everyone is safe. I can't imagine the fear in that situation. We did have a huge storm here in Paris 26th December a few years ago. Lots of structural and tree damage but thank goodness, because it was very early and during holidays, not many people outside at time. It made me realise I'm so glad I don't live in a climate where tornados and hurricanes are common - it's really scary.
The power of Mother nature!

I am always surprised that you guys don't live mostly underground? given that the weather has a habbit of tearing ones house up by its roots and redistributing it all over the neighbourhood...

Sounds scarey as hell but also exciting in that OMG we could die! kinda way.

Glad you and yours are okay.

When I was in the Navy I served along side an officer who was from Kansas, in fact the area hardest hit by the tornadoes last night, and
in her cubicle directly in front of her, as she sat at her desk, was a neat sign which read:

Toto, I don't believe we are in Kansas anymore

I cannot think of Kansas without thinking of Dorothy and that officer.

Wow! How close! I'm really glad everyone is okay. I can't imagine how it must be like to be that close to a tornado and I hope to never find out. *eek*

no place like home

Wow! What an experience. I'm glad you, your family and pets survived the storm. Maybe Jewell was so energized by the excitement of the tornado that she forgot she had mobility issues. Ha! -Diane

Oh wow! :( Glad you're safe - that's scary! :(

A year ago I sprained my ankle rushing down the stairs with one of my cats in my arms when the tornado siren went off one evening. I was in a hurry and missed the bottom step. Cat was less than impressed. ;) Fortunately there turned out to be no danger in our immediate area, so the only damage was to my ankle. :)

I am so glad everyone is ok. I live in Pennsylvania and we just had tornadoes here about 2 hours ago. As far as I can tell, everyone is ok here!
