So, it looks like we might be getting a rabbit, which tends to happen whenever we go to the state fair. But a rabbit is a far more viable choice than a cat (and we miss having a rabbit we can actually pet without it grunting at us and running away). Instead of getting one from the fair directly we've been talking to a breeder (well, I have, but it's my mom who wants a rabbit). This time we're hoping to get one young enough to train it to use a cat box so it doesn't have to be penned up all the time if possible. We're getting a dwarf rabbit, so of course there's a bit of concern with the dogs and cats. But the dogs are generally afraid of anything smaller than them and knowing my cats, they should lose interest pretty quick. Neither dogs nor cats had any real interest with our last rabbits, anyway. So though we will be cautious about this neither are we worried.

Even though it's my mom getting the rabbit, I'm rather excited about this. I always felt bad for our other rabbits because we would keep them in a pen and not take them out too often because they would poop on us, so it's going to be interesting to see if we can train this rabbit to have free run of the house without it leaving us little "surprises." ;)

You are incorrigible.....
>;-)

My father raised rabbits once......
I remember them like it was yesterday.....
They were mainly white but there was also a coal black one.....
He also raised White King pigeons
Soon we were knee deep in both as he refused to
kill any of them after my sister had a meltdown when she found out we were eating 'Thumper'......
Mom became quite desperate
At the time we were living in an old farm house when he was stationed in Tacoma WA and it had property which allowed him to have a massive garden and the menagerie..

Bunnies! I've always thought it would be fun to have a rabbit, but I've also always had cats that I'm fairly certain would efficiently murder anything smaller than them. ;) I'm glad your cats are more agreeable!

We've had lots of luck training our bunnies over the years. They were able to roam the house freely all day and were quite fastidious about using their litter boxes. Our current 2 bunnies are about 8 years old, so it is a while since they were trained. However, I think what made it easier was that the rabbit rescue agency we got them from neutered or spayed them and apparently doing that greatly improves litter habits as well as the friendliness factor.
