I have a couple on-going AU-verses that run along in my imagination and entertain me to no end, but when it comes to actually writing AU, the canon-nazi in me squicks.

I'm so much the same way. I have so many AU ideas, but I can barely get myself to write any of them.

I think the other problem, for me, is that writing AUs takes a lot more effort than writing canon. With AUs, especially ones that really, really veer from the storyline (like LtLJ's Retrograde series) it requires a lot more effort (reworking the characterization, storyline, etc), the kind of effort put into an original fic, and I would much rather put that kind of time and imagination into an original fic.

At the same time, I find the possibilities presented with AUs intriguing, and love that SG has made it possible to explore AUs without feeling like you're crossing over into character-stealing original stories.
