kriadydragon: (Shep 2)
Since reading SGA fics helps me write SGA fics, I've recently come to the conlusion about what kind of fics I like. I read just about anything except for slash and romance, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about how you have some stories that are very canon in their adventures, and some that explore specific aspects of Stargate Atlantis; such as the military or the science, single characters or character interactions, Sheppard/city interaction and so on. Kind of like categories within categories. I've read all kinds but there are certain ones I become more engrossed in than others.

I'm strictly a John Sheppard whump fan, and do so scrounge for that whump.
I prefer canon type adventure stuff - namely an adventure either on another world or caused by some kind of alien device running amok.
I enjoy Sheppard/McKay friendship interaction more than team (with team you sometimes get too many POVs and half the time I don't really care what's happening with everyone else), but also like those stories where it's just Sheppard.
But above all, there's gotta be whump. I hate uneventful stories.

I'm not saying this is all I read or will read, just what I enjoy the most.

Pet peeve in a fic -
When Sheppard doesn't get whumped. Angst just isn't enough for me. I'll settle for even a minor injury.
The 'meanwhile back at Atlantis' segments. I know sometimes they're necessary, and I've had to do them a few times in some of my stories, but I really can't stand them. I say if you can avoid those kinds of scenes, do so. Unless, of course, they're absolutely necessary in the long run.
When a writer exaggerates Sheppard's 'supposed' tendancy to play down his injuries that later leads him to being yelled at by Beckett. I can kind of see that happening during a crisis, but I think some people over do it as we've yet to actually see that happen in the show. The guy isn't dumb. If the crisis is over and he's severely injured, he's going to go to Beckett.
Which also leads to Sheppard's friends getting mad at him and bullying him to open up about some painful part of his past. That just doesn't sit well with me, and is too much of a quick fix.
I forgot the mention the whole 'Kirking' issue. Not when McKay teases Shep about being Kirk, but when a  writer - again - exaggerates it and makes Sheppard out to be some kind of womaniser or man whore.

Just because a story may have these little nuances in them doesn't mean I stop reading the fic.

So what's your preference, pet peeves - or just preferences? This is not a poll or anything, I'm just curious to know. Let me know, and do the same in your journal to see what others have to say.
