Bit bored tonight but I'm not ready to go to bed, so please excuse my musings.
I've come to realize that I'm really not a fan of humor stories where a group gangs up - so to speak - on a single character (teases them, laughs at them, what have you). Yes, more so when it's my fave character being ganged up on. But who ever it's happening to, over all, it has a way of making me slightly uncomfortable - and annoyed but that's a given: it's not hard to set me off. The only exception is when the one taking the "hits" gives back as good as he/she takes. The group polks fun at them, they polk fun at the group or a member of the group. Or if the humiliation or teasing is a shared experience, then I find it funny.
I chalk it up to being a personal thing. When it comes to confrontations of any kind, I'm terrible enough at it as is just dealing with one person. When it comes to a whole group of people, the outcome is a lot more volatile. What starts out as harmless fun at my expense quickly dissolves into a "scene." I don't like being ganged up on. So, for that reason, I feel uncomfortable when I read about it (or see it) happening to fictional characters.
Does that make it a squick of mine? Mmmmm, I really wouldn't call it a squick as it doesn't bother me the way whump to the nether regions does. It's not something that grosses me out or makes me squirm, and most of the time is a small enough scene or situation to be little more than a mild annoyance quickly set aside for the rest of the story. But, due to how it was executed (for example, if it was the dominant situation of the story), there have been times when it's turned me away from a fic.
I just don't find it funny. But that's just me.;)

Date: 2009-02-10 08:07 pm (UTC)From:But without that little happy ending, I find it both rather cruel and a cheap form of humor. What I really hate, though, is when the one being picked on is unable to defend him/her self - either because they can't say the right thing or what ever they say goes ignored. That's when it really makes me squirm as I have trouble when it comes to verbal self-defense myself.
