Brain Storm

At the moment I'm in the middle fo watching Brain Storm (I haven't seen it yet, and to be honest it's not holding my interest - heh, no Sheppard :D). But I do want to hug Rodney; poor guy having dangerous research of his stolen.

I'm neither here nor there about the episode, in that I don't hate it nor am I growing fond of it. All the same, it's made me incredibly curious as to what would have happened if Sheppard had gone instead of Keller. Or Sheppard and Ronon. Or, heck, the whole team! (With Teyla as Rodney's "date" instead - heee!)

I would love to be able to read fic exploring that idea, but all I've seen is slash, slash, slash. Anyone know of any gen stories that deal with Sheppard or team goes with Rodney instead of Keller?

I'd like to write a similar idea myself - not a fix-it story, but where Rodney goes to maybe another science convention and either John or the team goes with him. I must ponder this, see if it goes anywhere. As usual, though, no promises. If someone gets an idea of their own, feel free to go ahead with it :)

I found Brain Storm boring. I don't mind Rodney and Keller and I don't mind them together, but I didn't care about the storyline or the other scientists.

I haven't read any AUs to this. I did read a story once about John going with Rodney to a science convention. Rodney was going just to defend someone else (a former student). Wish I could remember the name or who wrote it.

I know. While I was watching it all I could think was "I wish Rodney was back in Atlantis having adventures with the team."

You know, I thought there might have been a story I ran across at one time. But after giving it some thought, I think it actually might have been a request I posted in Genrequest a while back :o

I know there was a nice McSheppy one that had John instead of Jen going, but darn it if I can remember the name.

I also remember reading one that told the story of John and Ronon's camping trip, which would have been fun to watch. (I think it would have been a better episode if they would have switched back and forth between the Rodney/Jen and other members of the team B stories)
Anyway, since my brain is swiss cheese, I can't remember the name of that one either!
But I know they are out there.... *runs off to search*

I loved Roughing It. It was the missing link to Brain Storm. I didn't hate Brain Storm, but I cringed during most of the Keller scenes. I definitely would have liked it better if Keller hadn't been there. It was just weird and so unlike Stargate PTB to push such a relationship oriented episode. It should have been about the science or even Rodney's professional insecurities, not the Rodney/Keller budding relationship. I'm not totally against pairings, but this one just doesn't work for me. (Besides, I didn't think the writers *did* relationships.) Anyway, yes I would have much preferred a member of Team Sheppard gone with Rodney...not that they would have wanted to. Or better yet, have them recalled to Earth to try to help. Team, team, team or a combination thereof. I also like AU and would love to read an AU for Brain Storm involving a member of the team, rather than Keller. I think Sheppard might be the likely candidate or Teyla (though, I always want Sheppard involved). I doubt Rodney would choose Teyla...she would be like a fish out of water at such an event, thought that could make for some good reading. I could see Sheppard going...maybe "forced" by Rodney's anxiety and insecurity about attending. A way to boost Rodney's confidence in facing his peers. Being team leader, I think he'd do that for Rodney...you know, have his back. -Diane

Oh, the missed opportunities! IT's rather depressing when I think of it.

But, in a way, it actually makes some sense that Rodney would ask Keller to go. This is a convention full of his peers - rivals, actually. People who either thoguht or hoped he would fail. Of course he would want to take a professional and pretty woman as his date. Had he taken Sheppard or even Ronon... well, that would have let things open to the kind of interpretation Rodney would have loathed. Sort of like in Outcast, when Sheppard introduces Ronon to Dave, says he's a civilian contractor and Dave responds with a disbleiving "Right." Of course, my take was that he didn't believe Ronon was a contractor. Others took it as Dave thought Ronon was John's boyfriend :P.

Although, had Rodney taken John he could have just as easily shown-off.

"I'm funded by the military. This guys a Lt. Colonel heading the military division of the top secret instillation where I work. I've even went on dangerous missions with him, but that's all that I can say because it's all very hush-hush. Beat that!"

John smiles sheepishly and nods.

Yeah, I was pretty meh about it too. I don't hate it with the deep loathing that some do, but neither was I all that excited about it. :S I did feel bad for Rodney though, so sounds like I had pretty much the same reaction you did. :)

I think I have seen a few tags that do what you're talking about, but all McShep unfortunately. Sadly, no gen rewrites yet that I've seen. :(

I feel there was logic - well, Rodney logic ;) - behind why he took Keller. He wanted to show off. But it was a little too much, too soon. Had they developed the realtionship sooner in the show (say, season four), then I think it wouldn't have felt so forced - at least to me.

I'm surprised by the lack of gen tag for this. I thought for sure there'd be more John and Ronon camping trip stuff, or at least a few rewrites and AUs where one of the team go (not necessarily John.) I know there's been a lot of requests for such, but I only know of four camping stories - one of them mine, another by Eildon Rhymer, the other two really short and one of the two verging on slash. No Brain Storm tags or rewrites that are gen.

Oh, would you? Because several people imagined what would happen if John went along instead of Jennifer and strangely it turned out every time that John TURNED INTO Jennifer! With the pacifying role, and the getting trapped in the freezing water peril and the being generally useless and needing rescue by Rodney. All things of which I approve, in the normal course of things, but isn't the point of imagining this alternate world where Rodney asked his best friend instead of his best girl along that it be different?!

Ooh, that was a bit ranty, wasn't it. ::sheepish:: But still. Different, yes?
