Movie Review - Cirque Du Freak: The Vampires' Assistant

I'm not a big fan of vampires, I think them an overdone concept, but I really liked them in this movie. Obviously, that's saying something ;) I did feel the movie moved a bit quickly at times, but I have the tendency to feel that way about most movies when I first see them. I liked that the kid wasn't what the previews made him out to be: unhappy with life and wanting something better. He was a goody-two-shoes, just trying to do what was right, a push-over who eventually pushed back. The humor was great with the right amount of angst here and there, and great fight scenes :D.

I'm a sucker for anything a touch strange and Macabre - not too much to overwhelm, but not so little that it feels like it smacks of effort. This movie had that balance, I thought. The freaks of the freak show are, at first, a little disconcerting, but it's one of those things that once you get to know them, you want more of them. This movies has made me interested to read the books and see where it goes.

And I saw previews for the coolest looking movie. It's called Avatar (Not The Last Airbender, this is another movie with the same title). It. Looked. Gorgeous - sci-fi but not the usual killer aliens or space battles. This one looks like it actually has imagination, and a plot that isn't just about blowing aliens or space-ships out of the sky. I'm totally looking forward to it.

I thought about seeing that movie, but I'm not sure yet. It takes a lot to get me into the theatres.

I'm the same these days: I have to want to see something before I'll see it in theaters. But I have pretty good gut instincts about movies, in that I know right away if I'm going to like it or not (just myself, can't predict the same for anyone else). That instinct has yet to steer me wrong :D

I went to see if because it looked cool. So there :P I want to read the books. Next week, we're going to Borders, yay!
