My abused Shep slave fic is the hardest story I have ever written, and I love it! I'm now five chapters in (I don't deal with word counts as they mean nothing to me) and though it's proving a challenge, it's a challenge I'm plowing into head-on. What I really like about this story, though, is that I have original fics that are similar in angst and psychology to the slave fic, so this is good practice for me.
Now whether I accomplish what I have set out to do is another matter, but we'll see. Live and learn and stuff. Sheppard isn't always an easy character to write. Mostly, I think, because we know less about him than we do the other characters (a past for him would really help. I'm reluctant to make one up for him, but may need to). I blame the writers. Give us a freakin' back story already!
The show also tries to make him the typical stoic, nothing-gets-to-me-or-can-break-me hero. Thankfully, Joe F. manages to get plenty of real human attributes that keeps him more real. He's human, and all humans have breaking points.
I'd give a snippet but I don't want to give anything away. Sorry.
