Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.
Just one question, please, but it can have sub-parts.
Question can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.
My fandom is mostly SGA, but I also dabble in Thoughtcrimes, First Monday, and Dr. Who. The latter two I really need to write more of :/

Date: 2010-01-05 08:45 pm (UTC)From:I do think I may have Sheppard/Teyla leanings, I don't know why. Probably because I like Teyla just a touch more than I like Elizabeth (just a small touch). Overall, though, I really don't like pairing canon characters with canon characters. If I were to pair John with someone, it would be with an OFC - which I have done, just once, in my story Eternity.

However I do with pairing him with any part of his team or for that matter the military expedition in general......
Sheppard is the team leader and he cannot step across the line by involving himself with any part of his team or member of the expedition without incurring a serious breakdown in discipline and morale. This is not only true regarding his team, but when it comes to military members of the expedition which he commands on Atlantis.
Sheppard is still military, even though people keep pointing out to me that he is on Atlantis. That is entirely true, but he IS first and foremost an AF officer and secondly one who is based on Atlantis at the pleasure of the AF.........
I think some fail to understand how deeply ingrained it is in the military and Sheppard has been around long enough to fully understand the consequences of such behavior. They go far beyond trouble for him personally.

but the trouble seems to be that many ff writers feel they can do whatever with the characters simply because they ARE fiction. They may be fictitious, but there is still an established story line with complicating factors, e.g. what I described. To totally ignore that is simply unbelievable to me because of the catastrophic result which would change the entire story line.

Date: 2010-01-05 09:04 pm (UTC)From:I think, for one thing, there's more freedom with original fiction. Sometimes in fanfic, I want to write the characters a certain way, but can't since that's just not how they are (for example, I sometimes write Sheppard as a little too moral than he actually is, and am tempted to make him way too moral than he really is). With original fiction, I can tweak and shape the characters in a way so that if I want them to have moral leanings, or be morally ambiguous, they will. And when a situation in which that aspect of their personality needs to come to the forefront, it can and plausibly so.
Fanfiction, of course, is easier to write since the characters are already there, shaped and at the ready to be placed in whatever situation you place them in. There is still a need to study and understand the characters, especially how they would react to a given situation, but the effort isn't quite as involved, I think, as it would be with an original character.
