Finally! I was able to start my Help_Pakistan story and got around 2000 words down. I was given an open prompt - anything goes as long as there's Shep whump. Should be easy, right? Er... not so much. I'd considered, then dumped, quite a few ideas before finally settling on the one I'm writing now. I was getting a little worried that I wouldn't come up with anything to write.

On the flip-side is my Holiday fic exchange story. I was quite excited about my prompt, because it fit perfectly with an idea that has been bopping around my head for a long time, one that I wasn't going to write because it was too complicated. But I've since replotted it and can finally put the idea to paper.

Open prompts are actually tough since in the back of your mind, you're still trying to cater to the tastes of the person you're writing for. But it's also a chance to get some bunnies to paper :D

And YAY on your holiday exchange story! Mine is very complicated so I knew I needed to really think about it early even if I won't be writing for it for a while.

Very true. The person I'm writing for is pretty easy to write for, but because they paid for this story I want it to be the best I can make it. My other problem is that I tend to lose the motivation to write when I have to write - when there are due dates or requests. So although I have plenty if ideas to work with an idea also has to be something I want to work with, a lot, or else it refuses to be written.

Which makes me wonder why I'm even considering NaNo when due dates play such havoc with my motivation :P

Oooh, complicated :D I love a good complicated story. My own story was complicated because it kept leaning precariously in a "poor woobie John whose team is being mean to him" direction that was hard to justify. I think shortening it - namely cutting out the parts that would have led to Team!Jerk and woobie John - has made the story doable. Not the deep, dark epic I wanted it to be, but doable.
