To kick off the new year I present to you a challenge - the SGA gen comment-a-thon challenge (yeah, changed the title. I just really didn't like “non-kink meme.”) There are no due dates, no end dates, so feel free to participate whenever you want.
Rules: You'll be presented with a list of prompts. The challenge, should you choose to accept it...
Readers: Pick a prompt from the list below – only one – and request a story based on that prompt using the following format:

Request:
Don't want:
Writers: Pick a request and comment with a story or pick a prompt from the list and comment directly with a story. Posting a story in your own journal or elsewhere is allowed so long as you comment here with the link. Please put the title of your story and/or (should you not have a title yet) rating in the comment header. If you are commenting directly with a prompt of your choosing, please put the prompt at the start of the story (Ex. Prompt: *your prompt here*). Also please warn for anything you feel should be warned for (blood, violence, torture, etc) at the start of the story.
But here is the catch: The story must be gen. Gen, for this meme, are stories that do not focus on a pairing nor anything sexual, though acknowledging canon pairings is fine so long as they are not the focus.

Commenting with a link to the story
Any questions you may have (just please put “question” in the header).
Posting Anonymously
Not Permitted:
Real people fiction

So Near, So Far PG Part 1 of 2
Date: 2011-01-09 12:22 am (UTC)From:The Atlantis gate room was quiet, given that it was well after midnight and most of the city was soundly sleeping. Only one technician worked the control consoles, with the minimum security contingent of two heavily armed marines standing silent guard. Not that Rodney McKay saw any of this as he exited the wormhole behind Ronan and Teyla. He appeared to perform a clumsy pirouette as he came through the gate, so that he now stood facing the shimmering event horizon.
Rodney usually made a bee line straight to the lab, infirmary or shower, depending on what type of mission it had been. But now he just continued to stand there in front of the gate, and although he was drenched with sweat and feeling pretty damned uncomfortable, he wasn’t going anywhere. He was momentarily confused, trying to sort through what he thought he’d glimpsed from the corner of his eye as he entered the off world gate. He wiped his forehead with the back of his arm and dropped his pack to the floor, waiting for the familiar flicker signaling an arrival, in this case, either the last person to leave the planet, or the MALP they had sent through days ago to monitor weather conditions on M3X-141.
Or more appropriately, “Sauna Hell”, as Rodney had come to call it over the course of the past four hours. Uninhabited for a thousand good reasons … number one being the killer humidity; number two the killer wildlife; and number three the completely depleted, piece of useless crap ZPM.
“McKay. What are you doing?”
Rodney ignored Ronan’s question, even as the big man moved closer to stand beside him. Sheppard had been slightly to McKay’s right and only a step or two behind him. Rodney had caught a flash of movement and a weird whooshing noise from Sheppard’s position and tried to turn around, but it was too late, Rodney was already being swallowed by the wormhole. In that last split second Rodney may or may not have heard John utter a surprised grunt of pain as well. He couldn’t say for sure.
Touching the radio in his ear, Rodney said, “Sheppard?”
Teyla’s voice sounded somewhere behind him. “Rodney, is there a problem? Where is Colonel Sheppard?”
Rodney’s concern was ratcheting up at lightning speed. Still no sign of John Sheppard coming through the gate, and no reply on the radio to say he was still on ‘141 either.
He yelled over his shoulder at the gate technician, “You registering an incoming traveler?”
“No signal yet, sir.”
The gate remained open, yet ominously still.
Then a crackle sounded in Rodney’s ear, followed by the sound of rapid breathing. Sheppard panted, “I stepped on something. I’m in trouble here.”
Big trouble, if the tension in Sheppard’s voice was anything to go by. Rodney immediately turned around and sprinted towards
the control area. Once he was at the main console, he pushed the technician aside and began typing commands. Ronon and Teyla had followed and were waiting as patiently as possible for Rodney to fill them in.
Re: So Near, So Far PG Part 2
Date: 2011-01-09 12:24 am (UTC)From:Everyone crowded around the computer screen. The camera was pointed away from the gate, so the only thing to be seen was a wall of rainforest vegetation, but they could all hear the sound of Sheppard’s strained breathing through the control room speakers. Rodney paused for a second, swallowed the lump in his throat, then focused on repositioning the MALP.
Teyla said, “John, can you hear me? Can you tell us what has happened?”
Sheppard answered almost immediately, voice low, his words clipped but clear. “Triggered the mother of all booby traps. I’m not going anywhere for the moment.”
As Rodney turned the MALP in a tight semi-circle, vision of a straight row of thin metal spikes jutting up from the gate platform appeared on screen, standing about half a meter high and spaced closely together. The pointed tips looked brutally sharp. The MALP spun a little further and Sheppard came into view. At first glance Rodney had a fleeting, stupid thought that John was trying to stretch out a leg cramp … his upper body was leaning forward, his head was down, and one arm was stretched out to the side, so that could brace himself against the lower curve of the stargate. Sheppard’s left leg was angled out behind him, while the other leg was twisted awkwardly at the knee. Something was very wrong with the positioning of that front leg…
Rodney realised what he was looking at. His throat incredibly tight, Rodney heard himself saying, “Oh … God.”
One of the spikes was protruding from Sheppard’s lower right thigh, very close to the knee.
Ronan was immediately in motion, heading back down towards the gate. “Shut it down. I’m going through.”
On screen, Sheppard turned his head, looked straight at the MALP and shouted, “No! Stand down!” Once the order had been given, Sheppard bit down on his bottom lip and screwed his eyes shut. His face, already pale from shock, drained completely of color. The arm he was using to support himself began to tremble harder against the gate.
Teyla spoke before Rodney could begin to explain the situation he’d only just come to fully comprehend himself.
“Colonel Sheppard cannot move away from the gate, Ronon. There is no way he could avoid the new wormhole forming if we should try to go through to help.”
Yep, Rodney thought. That about summed it up. And then came another thought, that it was a very good thing he hadn’t opened his mouth just then. Because there was absolutely no way he could have said those words so calmly. And he wouldn’t have said those words anyway. More likely he would have said something like, Sheppard is the proverbial deer in the headlights, Conan. Kawoosh equals obliterated colonel, get it?
Rodney scrubbed his face with his hands, then said to the marine closest to him, “You and your friend go get Weir and Beckett. Tell them I’ll explain everything when they get here.”
Re: So Near, So Far PG Part 3
Date: 2011-01-09 12:27 am (UTC)From:Eleven minutes had elapsed since Rodney stepped off Sauna World, and the gate room was now fully lit and operational. He’d identified the closest stargate to ‘141 and was now accessing schematics of the solar system to estimate travel time. Sheppard was not going to last long. If the shock didn’t kill him, exposure would. And that was if he didn’t pass out first. Rodney tried not to think about one of those big jungle cats helping itself to a colonel kebab.
Which reminded him, he should have something to eat. He’d had nothing for over three hours.
Rodney glanced away from his computer screen for a second. Carson Beckett and Elizabeth Weir were staring at the live feed of the MALP transmission. Both of them looked thoroughly appalled, but Weir especially seemed to be having trouble believing her eyes. Further away, Ronon was pacing back and forth in front of the gate. Teyla was down there saying something to him, no doubt trying to calm him.
All so very helpful. Rodney realised Elizabeth was staring at him.
“Why would anyone put something like that in front of a gate?” she asked.
Rodney contemplated pretending he didn’t hear her. On the scale of stupid questions, it ranked top ten.
“We found ruins and other evidence of a fairly advanced society. Evidently it’s their version of a gate shield.”
Beckett shook his head, “It’s the most barbaric thing I’ve ever seen!”
Great. The master of stating the glaringly obvious was on the job. Rodney squeezed his eyes shut for a second, then left Weir and Beckett to do whatever they thought they had to do. He went back to the actual work of saving the day.
“Colonel Sheppard, this is Elizabeth. Can you hear me?”
Sheppard replied, more slowly this time. “Yeah.”
“We’re going to help you, Colonel. But as you know, the Daedalus is currently on Earth, so it may take a little more time than we’d like to get a jumper to you.”
“Figured that out already,” Sheppard said. “How long? I’m feeling a little weird here.”
Only John Sheppard could say something like that, Rodney thought. He was skewered on an alien defence system, his leg was snapped above the knee, and the temperature reading on ‘141 was climbing past forty degrees Celsius.
But he was only feeling a little weird.
Re: So Near, So Far PG Part 4
Date: 2011-01-09 12:33 am (UTC)From:“John, its Carson here. Rodney tells me you think your femur is broken and you’ve self administered ten milligrams of morphine. You may need to inject another ten.”
“Negative on that, Doc. I’m hoping not to pass out here. Leg’s definitely broken. I tried to pull myself off the spike when it first happened. It’s through the bone. Not much bleeding.”
“Okay, avoid moving as much as possible. Do you have any water left? You need to keep hydrated.”
“No water.”
“Okay, son. It’s all right. We’ll be there as soon as is humanly possible.”
Beckett tapped his earpiece to disconnect. “Rodney, we need to get to Colonel Sheppard within the hour.”
“There’s a space gate above a neighboring planet …” Rodney waited for the final information to load. His stomach sank.
“Seven hours, best time,” he quietly informed.
Beckett’s head dropped.
Elizabeth said, “There must be something else we can do.” She pointed down at the activated gate. “He’s just there, a few seconds away!”
A couple of seconds, a couple of thousand light years. Rodney rolled his chair over to the live screen and tapped his radio. Sheppard was in much the same position as last time, only his pack was open and some of its contents were strewn in front of the gate.
“Sheppard. We’ll have to close down this wormhole to send a jumper through to M3X-199. It’s going to take a little while.”
“Define a little while, Rodney.” Sheppard didn’t lift his head up to speak, and he sounded even more breathless.
“We’ll be there before dawn.”
There was a good few seconds of silence before Sheppard responded. “Understood.”
Rodney was about to tell John that they’d keep the wormhole open while the jumper was readied. Then he thought of something.
“You carrying any C4?”
“Depends. You got a plan that doesn’t involve blowing me up?”
Rodney was repositioning the MALP again, reversing it to the opposite side of the gate. He lowered the camera till he was looking at the base of the last spike in the row. There was about a two centimeter gap where the rod rose out of the platform.
“A small blast over here might be enough to retract the device into its casing.”
“Yeah but I’m way over here, Rodney.”
Rodney smiled. “That’s why there’s a little claw thingy on the front of the MALP. We have nineteen minutes on the clock. Your call, Sheppard.”
Rodney repositioned the camera to face John. He was holding a section of C4 in his left hand.
“Do it Rodney.”
*********
As it was, the colonel got home with a whole two minutes to spare. Would’ve been longer, Rodney mused, except Sheppard had taken the time to scream and pass out when the spike pulled back down through his leg. And on top of that, he promptly vomited everywhere when he came to, before dragging himself ever so slowly through the mess and into the wormhole.
He’d refused to let Weir close down the gate and send a medical team through. Said he could get back under his own steam.
Always with the macho, that man.
Rodney had been busying himself with a shower and food while Sheppard was in surgery. Now he was waiting with Weir, Teyla and Ronan to hear the news.
It didn’t take much longer for Beckett to come out and announce that he’d saved Sheppard’s leg, but the colonel would have to have further surgery and of course, a long period of rehabilitation. Rodney left Beckett and Weir to discuss the merits of whether this should be done in Atlantis or back on Earth. He knew Sheppard would make sure he won that argument. Weir would have the leading military orthopedic specialist aboard Daedalus within a day.
He joined Teyla and Ronan beside Sheppard’s bed. All in all, John didn’t look too bad. His leg was heavily bandaged, splinted and elevated in a long sling. The plaster would come later, so Rodney had plenty of time to think of a suitable insult.
Teyla looked up from Sheppard to smile at him. “What would we do without you Rodney?”
“Die horribly?” Rodney offered.
Ronan snorted and clapped Rodney hard on the back. “Good job McKay.”
Smiling, Rodney placed a hand to lightly touch John’s shoulder, and the team settled in to wait.
THE END
Hope that fit the prompt criteria closely enough. John was just out of reach, technically speaking.
