kriadydragon: (cartoon peril)
I know I have said this before but I seriously need to stop traipsing around fandom in search of stuff. In my attempt to seek out White Collar icons I came across various meta for the recent WC episodes. Curious (when will I learn!) I read them... and there went my perfectly content mood. As interesting as meta can be, we all have our personal views, our personal beliefs, our favorite characters and our theories. You read meta that feels like - and I emphasize "feels like," in that the post is not actually doing this, at least not on purpose - that feels like it's pretty much saying "your favorite character sucks and here's why" it's kind of hard to not bristle at least a little about it. Especially if, like me, you're rather protective of your favorite characters. After all, part of the reason why we fave a certain character is because we can relate to them in some way. i.e. we connect with them, and when you connect with something or someone, it's hard not to take a negative review on that something or someone a tad personally.

Don't act on that reaction, or at least react politely, and your fine. But it's still a downer. It's why I eventually stayed clear of episode reviews and meta in SGA as it was starting to bring me down like crazy. To the point that I almost disliked the show.

I'm also starting to suspect that Peter is the more favorited in White Collar. Not completely favorited, just... more preferred? I'm pretty much a Neal fan. Though I like Peter, there are times he kind of gets on my nerves (like the way he always barges in in Neal. That bothers me for some reason. I understand why he does it, but it still mashes my discomfort buttons hard).

No more meta for me. If I want to get thinky about a show, I'll do it in my own journal and anyone who wants to participate in the thinkiness can. I still need to find White Collar icons. Eh, I'll just ask my f'list.

Anyone know where I can find White Collar icons?

On a completely different note, my poor Dreamwidth account is collecting dust. What to do with it? What to do? I'm thinking of using it as a story archive for all my stories - the ones in LJ and the ones of FF.net. But, man, that's going to take a while. I don't even keep Dragon's Lair updated (which, note to self, I really need to do that).

But an archive would be nice since Dragon's LAir is mostly just links, and if something happened to LJ, FF.net and various fic communities some of those stories would be lost.

*Sigh* Archive it is, then.

What is meta?

Using your Dreamwidth as an archive for your stories sounds
terrific.

Thank you :D

I think this a testament to my ill luck in searching for things. I search and I run into stuff that annoys me. Someone else looks and finds what I couldn't :/

I don't know the exact definition of meta, but it's basically the term I see used when referring to a discussion. So, in other words, it's a discussion, usually an in-depth discussion on a particular topic meant to generate further discussions. But I'm basing that on what I've observed so there could be more to it.

My poor dreamwidth account needs to be used for something :/ I think what I'll do is post one story a day, starting from my earliest works... well, early as in SGA... and moving up.

Re:

WC icons, you may find some pairing, as I am certain you are so familiar with given all the time ff is dedicated to slash when it comes to WC

Now I understand Meta. I love those discussions about SGA......wish there were more meta in that community......I forget what some of them have been, but I did enjoy them. Digging into the mind and personality of Sheppard in particular.

YES, using it for archive might be just what you need to dust it off and find a good spot for your many pieces of ff.

WC is pretty slash-happy. You have to be careful as the definition of gen in that fandom is pretty lose. You literally have no idea what you're getting into when you read a fic by someone who isn't a gen-only writer.

There's actually a ton of meta on SGA, it's just a matter of finding it. You have to be careful though. As I said, we all have differing opinions and viewpoints on a show and its characters. Some discussions can really make you think but others can leave you pretty dang upset. I've heard of people who've stopped liking a show because of all the negative meta on it.

WC seems to bring the slash happy out of the woodwork doesn't it??

I figure discussions always elicit some excitement when some are unwilling to even agree to disagree e.g. when we discuss McKay.......something I don't do very often as he annoys me so much
:D

That's true of any fandom, really. In the case of WC it's actually OT3s that are the most popular, specifically M/M/F. It wouldn't really bother me if the fandom wasn't so heavy with it and if the definition of gen wasn't so all over the place. You can't even trust the rating system as there was a story labeled both PG and NC-17. I took a quick look at the story and saw nothing NC-17 about it. It was odd.

YES I have noted that about gen..........it is all over the place
A sort of 'buyer beware' needs to be hung out with ff now

Yeah, that's exactly what troubles me too...a story which implies a Peter/Neal pairing but happens to have no sex in it, is NOT gen by my definition. Although I get the impression that more and more gen-writers are coming out of the woodwork lately. And they are mostly writing real quality work.

A rec site for white collar gen-fics would be great....

I ran head on into that in SGA...........in both cases they never posted a warning.
I wrote PMs to both writers to let them know they really needed a warning.
I saw later one of them did, but it really annoyed me as I do not read slash............
Later when I posted a comment about one of them that some recognized, I was censored e.g. 'well it was kind of light after all'
When I volunteered to beta for SGA Big Bang I stated clearly that I would not beta slash
Later I could not believe how many buzzed me asking if I would not beta their story with an addition 'couldn't you just overlook that part?'
Uh no.
I received so many that I finally pulled my offer and when the moderator asked me why I told her.

If you want to archive all your stories, I recommend An Archive Of Our Own. You have to get an invite, but you do not have to cut up your stories. I think Dreamwidth has a limit of 30k per entry and I know you ave tons of long stories. I've been thinking about doing that for a while. Maybe this weekend I'll finally get around to doing it :-P

I have a Dreamwidth account and I don't use it. Without original communities there, I have not see much reason to use it.

I've thought about using AO3 but for some reason it's really slow to load on my computer. Don't know if it's my computer or that's just the way the site is. I'll look into it, though, as I would really like my fic in one place.

I read some of the meta's myself and I can relate...but that's mostly, because most of the metas are more about personal feelings and less about real analysis of an episode or a story-line. A meta should be more about the work of the writers and the abilities of the actors (and metas about supposedly slashy undertones in the show should have a warning...I'm still trying to lose some of the images).

(And I'm a Neal-Fan, too).

Never found any use for Dreamwidth...I have my stories on ff.net, so they are in one place (important if you write for different fandomes) and that everybody can drop me a line if they want. I use my LJ-Account for Adult stories only (age restricted AND Friends-locked, to be safe).

True. Which, of course, there's nothing wrong with since you can't really help personal feelings no matter how neutral you try to be (such as with my review of last week's ep and my issues with sex scenes. And with this post when I mentioned how I sometimes get a little annoyed with Peter). But the more personal it gets, the less it feels like meta and the more it feels like venting.

Case in point, there was a bit of meta I was looking at today discussing the awesomeness of Kate. But the portrayal of Neal in that discussion left a bad taste in my mouth. I couldn't really tell if that was how the author of the meta saw Neal, or if in their attempt to paint Kate in a better light they gave Neal's characterization the short end of the stick. One of my biggest pet peeves in fandom is putting one character on a pedestal by knocking another character down a few pegs. I don't know if that was what the author of the discussion was doing, just that it kind of felt that way.

(And I should note, our own personal feelings can also get in the way when reading meta;))

I hate slashy undertones in a review. Any undertones, really, for stuff that isn't there or isn't going to happen (such as a particular pairing). It makes reading the review like you're reading a fanfic outline, not an episode synopsis, and you don't get as much out of it, I think.

I still post to FF.net from time to time but otherwise have given up on it as an archive due to various unpleasant experiences (of which I won't go into since it would end up making this post impossibly long).

Ah, I think I know which one you mean...although there were some interesting observations in this one, I strongly disagreed and resented the conclusion, too.

But I'm hardened about such issues...you have to be if you want to survive in the Harry Potter Fandome. Too many people out there who can't distinguish between liking a character because he makes a story interesting and liking a character because he is really sympathic. (ie since DH many make out Snape as the big hero and Lily the unfeeling bitch who put him on the path of a death eater. I think it cheapens his complex character if it gets reduced to a poor soul who never wanted to do something wrong but was forced to it because he was treated unfairly all his life...but I digress).

I never had problems as a writer at ff.net. I had some unfriendly review responses and one flame after I called someone on about using the messenger service for spam, but that's it. I know that people are always complaining about the site, but if someone puts adult-stories, Msts or songfics up there, they shouldn't complain if they get reported. But it's a big site, which is similiar to a big store: it's less personal and you are at a greater risk to fall into a statistic.

It did have some interesting points, but I really wasn't liking where it was going with Neal (in the comments especially. The post itself wasn't that bad but some of the comments gave me the impression of a little favoritism going on).

I'm a bit of a control freak, and I'll admit that there are some things that I just can't handle. I'm always left feeling that I need to do something, say something, which can be a bad thing if whatever spawned my need to act also left me in a foul mood. I normally know better than to react while in a mood, because the few times I did react did not end well. So for me it's usually best just to avoid the things that I know will leave me feeling bitter. But I also have curiosity issues and that's what gets me into trouble. I see a post, wonder what it's about, check it out then wish I had just ignored it.

I would get a lot of nit-pickers on FF.net. Not critiques as critiques are usually helpful (A good critique lists what works, then lists what didn't work in a manner that is polite and supportive). These nit-pickers... they tried to be helpful but mostly weren't. For example, I would get a lot of people who liked to "teach" me the difference between there, their and they're. This really annoyed me since, hello, I know the difference! I said so many times in my author notes but no one ever listened. I would edit my stories, had them beta'd, and people still found trivial things to nit pick. My earlier stories before I used a beta I can understand. Afterwards, it just felt like people were looking for reasons to be "helpful."

And it didn't help that you would have these stories with major spelling mistakes, plot holes and medical inaccuracies and no one would say a thing. I also eventually had to turn on my anonymous reviews as I was getting a lot of comments I could have easily argued, but couldn't since they were anonymous reviews :P And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

It could be a matter of fandoms, though, I don't know. I don't have as many of the same problems in White Collar as I did in Stargate Atlantis. I've had a few nit-pickers, but not as many as I did in SGA.

I once had a ready, who would always left me a list of missed ouf spelling mistakes. I asked him to beta. Those people are normally not very good if you need someone to talk the plot trough, but they are great for spelling and grammar.

Plot holes? Never noticed anything like that in your WC-stories...

Well, I noticed a lot of differences between different Fandomes...in the Numb3rs fandome, there are so many writers who hate Amita that it's not fun to read there. I totally love the Sentinel-Fandome, because there are a lot of high quality writers and it's unusual to post WIP's (the lines between slash and gen are a little blurry there, too, but it doesn't matter, because the writers know how to warn properly). Even if you don't know or even like the show, I totally recommend the fandome. The writing potencial is incredible, and in all my time there I never witnessed a fandome war. Harry Potter is the complete opposite: this is a fandome full of drama, and you really have to dig to find the good stories in it. The Voyagers! (not to confuse with Star Trek Voyager) fandome is so small that you end up reading the same couple of writers all the time. Well, and White collar is rapidly growing. I forsee a fandome war in the near future. The big question: Is Kate evil or not?

The thing is that there aren't many multi-fandome archieves out there...there is Archive of your own and a couple of really adult-sites which I wouldn't recommend for various reasons. LJ or similiar can work, if you do the tagging properly. Or you put the stories on various fandome archives (difficult for WC, because there isn'T an archieve yet) and keep links to all of them.
