Name a character I've written about, and I will tell you three things that I think are essential to keep in mind when writing that character.
I've written for Stargate Atlantis, Thoughtcrimes, white Collar, Magnificent Seven, Dr. Who, CSI:NY.

Date: 2011-02-05 08:19 pm (UTC)From:1. The first is also the obvious, and that is that Sheppard is loyal. I honestly think it isn't authority he has a problem with, but authority telling him that he has no choice but to leave a man behind. He may flirt, but you know he has a lot of respect for women. Just look at his interactions with Teyla, Elizabeth and Sam. Everyone matters to Sheppard, no matter their personality or flaws. And in turn, others can't help but, at least, to respect him back.
2. Sheppard is smart. Very smart. He takes his job seriously and does it well because he knows how to be clever, to think outside the box, to consider all possibilities no matter how crazy. The only time he might do something foolish is if someone else is in jeopardy or for revenge. And I don't care what the nay-sayers say, he's awesome at math :D And he gets science just enough to utilize it in a crisis.
3. Sheppard is an emotional guy. Maybe he's not all Mr. huggy like Ronon, but that's only because we all show how much we care in different ways. Sheppard doesn't hug, but he will do whatever it takes and then some to save the people he cares about. He wears his heart on his sleeve. You know when he's happy, sad, angry because you can see it plain as day on his face and in his actions.

Date: 2011-02-05 08:32 pm (UTC)From:2. For Danny to tease you, or joke with you, means he likes you - as a friend, or in the case of Lindsey, something more. But being the decent guy he is, he never takes his teasing overboard. He will never say what may end up hurting someone else. It's harmless fun, you know it's harmless fun and can't help laughing with him even if it's not out loud.
3. Danny's a passionate guy. He's mostly in control, but when emotionally wound up he's not afraid to show it. Being accused of accidentally killing an undercover cop scared the crap out of him to the point that he made a mistake. After his brother was beaten, he cried, outside in front of Mac, and didn't try to stop it. However, he doesn't get angry that easily, and even when he does it rarely reaches the point where he loses all control (although anyone messing with his family would definitely be the exception).

Date: 2011-02-05 08:41 pm (UTC)From:2. Ronon's team really is his family. Yes, even McKay though Ronon will never really admit it. He loves them like a family. And if his family's in danger, you'd better not get between him and any chance to save them.
3. Ronon's good at moving on, at accepting what he can't change, but that doesn't mean he let's everything go. He will rid the galaxy of the Wraith, one way or another. And as I mentioned in 2, something happens to his team or anyone he cares about, he will not stop until he has either saved them or avenged them.

Great analysis......

Date: 2011-02-05 08:58 pm (UTC)From:1. Sheppard is a geek and doesn't care what anyone thinks about it. He's going to enjoy what he enjoys, because like Ronon, he's a big kid himself. He loves comic books, loves science fictions shows, and I'd bet good money he watches cartoons. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a big Bugs Bunny and/or Pinky and the Brain fan.
2. Sheppard joined the military for more reasons that flying. He wanted to do something with his life that wasn't just about making money. He wanted to do something that meant something, that made a difference. He doesn't care about money, he cares about people, and it's part of why he's so good at his job.
3. Sheppard likes to be in control. I wouldn't call him a control freak, but if you want to really tick him off and drive him crazy, put him in a position where he can't do a dang thing about anything. Of course, it won't last, because he'll find a way out no matter what, and whatever happens next is your own fault for trying to take away his control ;)
See my reply to Nefhiriel above for Ronon.

it is totally obvious to anyone with any sense.

Date: 2011-02-05 10:19 pm (UTC)From:2. Life in the Pegasus galaxy really has changed Rodney. For example, as I said in 1, he cares and we know he cares. He's still Rodney, but a Rodney who's learning to think beyond himself.
3. But, again, Rodney is still Rodney. He won't hesitate to speak his mind and has pretty much no patience for what he thinks is less than intelligent.
Wow, that was harder than I thought :/

Date: 2011-02-05 10:41 pm (UTC)From:2. Neal's world isn't Peter's world. Neal knows only his way of doing things, so it's natural that's what he's going to fall back on. He trusts Peter, but I don't think he trusts the system. He knows his way has worked in the past, but with law enforcement all he sees are restrictions that keep anything from being accomplished. So it's difficult for him to stand by and let the law play out. But he's learning, not so much to trust the system completely, but that it's possible to work with the system.
3. That said, Neal is an adult, and what he does he doesn't do because he's immature and childish. He may act like a big kid, but as I said in two, he lives in his own world, one he's used to and comfortable with. But, at the same time, one he doesn't mind giving up. He's proud of his accomplishments because, to him, they're accomplishments. He said it himself, once - it's about people. He likes being able to prove himself, his intelligence, what he's capable of. But at the end of the day what he wants isn't things. All he really wanted was a comfortable and secure life with the woman he loved. But after losing Kate and everything that followed, I think now all he wants is a secure life - no more crime, no more manipulation. He was serious when he told Peter he didn't want to run. But it's going to take time for Neal to learn to do things other people's way - namely Peter's.

Date: 2011-02-06 01:29 am (UTC)From:1. Peter does know Neal, knows his strengths and weaknesses, and what it's going to take to get Neal on the right path in life. It's why Peter often gives Neal, as many people put it, "a slap on the wrist" rather than any real, full-blown punishment. Peter knows that to get Neal on the straight and narrow means to show Neal it's merits, that there's a better way to use his talents and make them worthwhile. He knows that it's not about disciplining Neal, it's about reprogramming him, I suppose you can say, to see beyond the only world he knows.
2. Peter is very much your average Joe, but with brains. It's why he and Neal click. They may be on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of lifestyle, but in terms of intelligence they are on the exact same page. But when off the clock, Peter isn't exactly the kind of guy who would stand out in a crowd. Which is a good thing. He's an FBI agent, and for an FBI agent standing out could mean a shortened life span.
3. Peter is also loyal - to his wife, to his team, even to Neal (even if he can't always trust Neal, he is there for him). I also want to say his job, but if any of the above were in trouble, I could see him betraying his job in a heart beat to help them. He did let Neal hide out in his house, then let him go, after all.

Date: 2011-02-10 04:55 am (UTC)From:Diana, hmmmm...
1. Diana is not a woman who feels the need to prove herself. She doesn't need to prove herself. She's good at what she does and she knows it - not because she is full of herself, but simply because she is confident. It's hard to make her feel threatened.
2. The death of her bodyguard probably made her grow up, fast. In other words, she's a lot more world wise than her years would suggest. She doesn't take her relationships for granted and will protect those she cares about and considers friends with everything she has (yes, including Neal :D).
3. She will totally be the next Peter Burke when Peter retires :D

Date: 2011-02-06 01:58 am (UTC)From:1. Teyla has the best patience in the world. She has to be, being a diplomat, in charge of major trade negotiations and all. It has prepared her well to handle the boys :D Though it also helps that she understands them, and also sees them as family. They are her brothers, even if at times they sometimes feel more like her children ;)
2. But it's the things she cares about that sometimes brings out her flaws. She endangered herself, John and the expedition when she asked John to stay behind on a culled planet to wait for friends who had chosen to stay on that world. Her search for her people became so intense she disregarded her safety and the safety of her child. It was only while rescuing her team by trying to control the mind of a queen, thus putting her son at risk, did she realize the danger.
3. When Teyla learns, she learns quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if she figured out to use a computer in under an hour. Perhaps it's a trait born of being part of a galaxy that travels daily through the Stargate, or perhaps it is just Teyla. Either way, when she integrates, she integrates well.
