I already made my rec on [livejournal.com profile] bookden but I'm rec'ing it again.

Malice by Chris Wooding. A novel/comic hybrid about a dark and sinister world found within a comic book. Rumor has it that when you mix the right ingredients and say the right words, you'll end up in Malice itself. Seth and Kady think it's just a story until their friend vanishes. They soon come to realize just how real and dangerous Malice is.

Mysterious, creepy, dark, characters who are actual people and not cardboard cut-outs there for the sake of having characters - what's not to love? :D This book had me hooked by page one.

I'm really crossing my fingers that my luck with books has changed. It's extremely rare for me to buy or check out a book and actually finish it. Most of the time, it's rare that I get past even the first chapter. My instincts when it comes to books hasn't been all that great. I can tell right off the bat if I'm going to love a movie, but that same instinct has been a dud when it comes to books. I'm a very picky reader, and it doesn't take much for me to set a book aside and never pick it up again.

But I had a good feeling about Malice. I read it, finished it, loved it, and now I've started another book that's showing a lot of promise. There are also several books I've come across that have caught my interest like crazy. I really hope this means a future full of a lot of reading. I'm tired of playing roulette with books, but I'm even more tired of having nothing good to read.

This is some of Chris Wooding's young adult stuff yes? I've read his two adult novels which are the beginning of a series called Tales of The Ketty Jay, enjoyed them on the whole but feel slightly uncomfortable about the treatment of the female characters, maybe I'm being overly sensitive but there's the faintest whiff of misogyny about it. It's a shame because other than that its very enjoyable, kind of a dark steampunk Pirates of the Caribbean with elements of Firefly and even a little HP Lovecraft thrown in.

He seemed to handle female characters pretty well in Malice. I'll admit that I wasn't actually a fan of the main female character (there were times she felt a bit self-centered. She would act cold toward the other characters if she didn't get her way, and it was occasionally annoying. But that could have been just me. The main male character had his annoying moments as well). But she stood on her own as a character and was able to handle herself when in a tight spot.

Thanks for the rec - I'm definitely checking out this book.
In return, I'm going to give you three recommendations:
The Myth Hunters by Christopher Golden
Nightlife by Rob Thurman
Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist

All of them are the first books in series.
Apologies for jumping on this opportunity to rec books... what can I say, I'm an avid reader and a library student ;)

Also, just so you don't think I'm a total creeper, I don't think I've introduced myself but I was lurking your profile looking for more White Collar fanfiction because I love your writing :)

Thanks :D

I'm always looking for new books to read. I'm so particular that I end up setting more books aside than finishing them, and there are times when I don't even want to try.
