We have this Opossum in our garage that we just can't get rid of. We have a trap set up (a humane trap) but the dang thing is smart and refuses to go in. And until the opossum is caught, we can't open the garage. Because we can't open the garage, the two stray cats I've "adopted" can't come in. One of the cats is pregnant, and I really want her to have her babies in our garage so that we can make them people friendly and get them adopted.

But that can't happen unless the stupid/smart opossum goes in the trap! And, believe me, we've tried everything.

But at least we know who's been pooping and peeing outside the litter box we have out there :P

Opossums are nocturnal. Try covering the trap with a blanket or tarp (except for the opening) and turning on the light in the garage.

Oh, good idea :D I was thinking that maybe we should cover the trap, make it look less like a "trap."

Also, raccoons (also fiendishly clever beasts) hate bad neighbors. Lights and loud music drive them right out. Of course, for this to work they have to have a way out. If you have no luck with the trap, you might try driving them out.

Poor opossum we forget that is us encroaching on their habitat. Hopefully, he'll go away peacefully so the kitties can get in.

I read online possum's are scared of snakes and that some people have had success using fake snakes where the animal likes to go. That would require getting some..lol

It's got plenty of habitat (I'm not just saying that, it really does), it just wants the free food.

I think we'll try the snakes should the trap continue to prove fruitless. Thanks :D

I don't know what type of trap you have, but we've had some opossums around before and had some success baiting our trap with fresh pears. They seem to really like them. I'm not sure if all opossums do, or if these were just used to eating the pears that fell from our tree, but it's worth a try. :)

I think at this point the opossum is on to us. We've blocked off all its other food supplies (i.e. the cat food) but it's still avoiding the cage.

Have you baited the trap? Try canned cat or dog food (nothing fancy) but *don't* set the trap for a few days. That way the opossum will start to consider the trap as a safe place to get food.

Once you see evidence that it's been eating the bait food then set the trap.

Here's a link for more info on how to deal with nuisence opossums.
