Continuation of this here post, which you need to read if you don't want to be horribly confused.
So I... er... sometimes read, sometimes skimmed the next two books of the series. Nothing changes with the male character's handling and, frankly, I couldn't take it any more. I skipped ahead like I always do when reading something that's driving me crazy but I want to know how it ends, and I'm done.
It read like a fanfic. I know I make that comparison often but this series really did, honest to goodness, read like a fanfic - the kind of fanfic where you go in, with no clue as to who the author's favorite characters are, and learning pretty quick who their favorite characters are (and aren't). And had this book been a fanfic, it would have made a lot of sense. But because it's original, because this characters are the author's and only the author's, it confuses me. Why shaft your own character? You created them, so why put some on a pedestal while leaving others on the floor? And why make the shafted character the main POV?
All I can figure is that A) male character was, maybe, meant to be the comedy relief or B) sometime during the writing process the author had a falling out with male character or C) male character really was there just to make female character and the wizard look totally awesome in the eyes of the readers or D) the author wasn't aware that male character was being shafted.
I seriously hope I never end up doing that to any of my characters. It was so frustrating, because I liked his character, looked forward to reading about him, but cringed every time. He was reprimanded even when he did something right, mostly disregarded by those around him unless they had to absolutely pay attention to him, didn't get the kinds of descriptions the other characters got (because, seriously, you couldn't go a sentence without the wizard's scars or female character's boniness being described), when he got hurt he was either over it quickly or given rough care and more reprimands... shall I go on? In his eyes, all the characters hung the moon. In all the other character's eyes, he was either just there or a bumbling idiot.
*Shakes head* I just don't get it.
