This is something I stumbled across late one night while I was flipping through channels.
It surprised me, it really did. I went in without any expectations because I was bored and curious and it sounded interesting. I wasn't too thrilled with the animation at first (and a dragon that pees fire is the kind of low-brow humor that usually turns me off of a show or movie), but the more I watched the more I was blown away.
First off, I'm a very visual person and once the adventure got under way, with the heroes setting off on their journey, the more I was awed. The animation was, in fact, as it turned out, gorgeous. The setting was spectacular and really enjoyable to look at. I would actually rate it up there with Avatar in terms of visual creativity, and the music was of the kind that makes you want to buy the soundtrack.
Second, though the story is as generic as they come - two underdog heroes tasked to kill the big bad dragon and hero worshiping, wanna-be knight little girl - it was pretty well executed. You came to care about these characters, even the obnoxious little girl, and the action scenes were nicely intense.
I'm actually thinking about buying it, that's how much I ended up enjoying it. I thought it was way better than some of the animated movies that made it to theater. My only quibble is the end. Nothing major but it throws you a bit and goes a little surreal. But the rest of the movie makes up for it, IMHO.
