Well, it happened. All my mom's talk about adopting a dog ended up being more than just talk. We have another dog (I'll post a picture of her when I have one). Her name is Sophie, a black Cocker Spaniel mix, and was impossible to resist.
It's one of those situations that you never see coming. In fact, we so not saw it coming I'm still rather reeling about it, especially considering who the dog is. She was one of my (as I like to call them) Iso dogs. I volunteer to clean and take care of the animals in the cat and dog isolation ward, where the sick animals are kept. Sophie, formerly known as Heartbreaker, I first encountered in iso. She only has three legs, and is the cutest, sweetest thing ever, but because she's a puppy, I couldn't take her for a walk (because puppies are so susceptible to illness, you can't walk them, you have to carry them, to keep them from contracting any illnesses from off the floor). Neither could I carry her around because iso was out of gowns (we have to wear protective gear in iso to keep from spreading any illnesses). I felt so bad about that, but was sure she would be adopted out quick.
One week later, she's still there. And because I told my mom about her last week, and my mom asked about her this week, I told my mom (who had to pick me up) that she was still around. My mom went in to look at her and, next thing we knew, we'd adopted her.
So much for not getting any more dogs :P But I think she will be a great dog for my mom. She's so sweet and friendly and playful (and social and obedient - and having only three legs isn't all that fast - which will make her an excellent dog to take on trips). Our only concern is our dog Jack who's acting really weird around her. I though that one of two things would happen with Jack when he met her; that he would feel nervous around her but eventually warm up, or nip at her until she left him alone. Instead, he starts whining and growling if she so much as walks around, and we're not sure what to make of it. Our other dog Annie loves her, and our other dog Lavi mostly ignores her (he's stuck up like that). But Jack... we don't know. Jack's a very nervous, needy dog who generally doesn't make a lot of sense and has to take pills whenever there's a thunderstorm or people are around. Maybe he just needs time to get used to her (or to realize that we aren't replacing him), but it's making us rather nervous as we really don't want to take her back because only one of our dogs has issues with her.
On the plus side, Sophie isn't all that interested in Jack, which will help make keeping an eye on them easier. But like I said, Jack gets weird if she's just walking around. He hasn't actually tried to attack her, but be that as it may we're going to have to be vigilant when these two are in the same room. We put Jack on his pills, so maybe that will help calm him down enough to realize that Sophie isn't anything to be afraid of.
