kriadydragon: (Reaper thinking)
I want to do more writing discussions in my journal but can't really think of a specific topic to start with (Well,I can, but they're rather vague and complicated and hard to explain so probably wouldn't be worth discussing).

So suggestions for discussion topics on writing would be awesome, anything from genres to characterization to figuring out how to go from staring at a blank screen to actually writing (but not "how to write sex" scenes because... no, just no. And, really, you can't toss a virtual pebble without hitting some post that tells you how to write sex scenes). Anyone? Anyone?

ETA: This post is for suggestions only. Actual discussions should be saved for when I post about a topic. Thank you.

I can think of three areas of concern:

Tying it together when there is a large amount of
narrative and dialog stacking up.......

How to get past POV, which I tend to, and move into a combination of POV and dialog...

Also how to survive a plateau ie where you cannot seem to move ahead
and think maybe it was a mistake.

'Help, my OC is taking over my story and I don't know if its a good thing?'

The Fine Art of Character Voice while still staying original

What to do when you have a beginning and an end, and nothing really interesting as a middle.

To WIP or not to WIP? (i.e. the dangers of a WIP vs greater reviews)

2. How to avoid Mary Sues
3. What should a good summary entail - and what not.
4. Different narration technics.
5. What's the difference between an AU and a disguised original story?
6. Character Bashing? OOCness? Why you should respect the characters you are writing about.
7. The danger of putting too much of your own voice into a story.
8. Crossovers - what's the appeal and what's the best way to handle them?

A discussion on handling crowd scenes, or scenes with more than two or three characters, would be great! That's something I've been struggling with in the current novel.

Including descriptions of characters' actions in dialogue scenes - how much is too much, and how much is not enough? You don't want it to just be a long string of "he said/she said", but you don't want to describe every eyebrow twitch, either ... (This is another thing I've been struggling with lately.)
