I got to wondering which author among authors was "the author" for me. The one whose books I loved to read, the one who inspired me, the one who taught me about this or that. Then realized it was kind of a silly question because, really, how can there be only one?
RL Stein and Christopher Pike, who got me reading like there was no tomorrow.
JRR Tolkein, who was inspiring me even before I read his books.
Ursula K LeGuinn, who taught me you can wax poetic without boring your readers to tears.
Diana Wynn Jones, who taught me the joy of whimsy.
Jim Butcher, who helped me figure out that pesky trope known as urban fantasy
Barbara Hambly, who showed me the importance of making your characters human and not just random hero A.
Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, who showed me the fun that is satire.
Peter S Beagle, the reason I want to write the best that I can (and why I still love unicorns).
Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, who gave me all kinds of ideas (and dragon riding!).
Piers Anthony, who woke me up to the fact that fantasy was my niche when I kept refusing to acknowledge it.
Charles Dickens, whose character Smike was the much-needed inspiration for my character, Amrin, the first character of the first full-length novel I ever wrote (and finished, and published... kind of).
Deborah and James Howe, authors of Bunnicula, the first book I read on my own (well, mostly).
