Sounds like a tall order to me

And yet it's amazing not only the kinds of stories people are looking for but how many stories are actually out there that fit the bill.

I once came across a request for a story that involved sunlight coming out of someone's butt, I kid you not.

Date: 2012-09-16 03:12 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] vecturist.livejournal.com
I think I know that fic, or at least a fic with that as the punchline in the SGA fandom.

Date: 2012-09-16 03:41 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
I'm sure it was the crackiest of crack fic (no pun intended) but either way just knowing it's out there is still a source of amusement for me :D

Date: 2012-09-16 12:22 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] aim2misbhave.livejournal.com
This is totally true.

Date: 2012-09-16 12:50 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
One thing I can't wrap my head around is why people provide links to stories that are clearly slash (as in have sex and everything) in answer to a request in which the person emphasized "gen only." It's why I don't like using fic-finding communities.

Date: 2012-09-16 06:51 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ninja007.livejournal.com
I think there are many reasons to this. There are some groups that a part of their brains shorts out when the word "gen" appears, as they cannot fathom anyone not loving their slash OTP. Others where they believe you'll read that fic, something will click, and you'll suddenly LOVE that OTP. And, I kid you not, they think that the slash is minimal and you can read/gloss right over it...

'they believe you'll read that fic, something will click, and you'll suddenly LOVE that OTP.'

I think you've hit the nail on the head. But,so NOT happening.

As for glossing/looking over it (like it's no big deal)??? Um, you can't 'unsee' things and I'm still trying to find ways to 'scub/scour' my brain clean when the unexpected pops up in a fic. :(

Date: 2012-09-22 04:37 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ninja007.livejournal.com
I can't tell you how many times I've been told that. They think its not really mentioned, but to those of us who don't like it, it's like the stink of a skunk. It's all over the place and up your nose!!

Date: 2012-09-16 08:08 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] aim2misbhave.livejournal.com
Well, I've been on one comm that, in the "gen" tag, there was threesomes, stories with every possible pairing between the characters involved, non-graphic slash that still very much involved sex, and even a porn spoof of the original.

So perhaps some of those people are the ones recommending stories with sex? Do they even know what "gen" means?

Date: 2012-09-21 03:34 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
They seem to not know or just don't care. What they don't understand is, they're not going to dupe someone into becoming a fan of what they're writing by mis-tagging it. The only thing that will accomplish is aggravating readers when they run into something undesirable or unexpected. When it happens repeatedly, people get to the point where they don't even try anymore.

Fanfic is a way to enjoy the show and it's characters beyond the actual air-time. We are all here for the same reason but have different preferences. This is why we have tags/genres.

Ignoring tags and genre labeling, mis-labeling etc. will only drive people from the fandom. I'm sure nobody wants a dead fandom but that's what eventually will happen.

Which is why I read so little fanfic anymore. ::sigh::

So glad I have a lot I bookmarked but have not read yet......

Date: 2012-09-16 12:52 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
It's why I wish I could read less fic, and why I refuse to get into any new fandoms :/

Date: 2012-09-21 03:46 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
I wish I could read 'more' fic.....if it was really gen. There just doesn't seem to be much 'real' gen out there anymore. Which is the point you made in your original post I believe. (Which makes my post here completely redundant lol.) But, but...it still makes me laugh to read it because it's just so, so ... yeah.

Date: 2012-09-16 03:34 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
Just found your fic list on FFnet. I can't wait to dive in. :D I don't get a lot of time to read on the computer so I turn them into pdf files and take them with me on my pmp. I hope you don't mind late reviews.

I know from others that you are what I consider a 'safe' author to read.

Date: 2012-09-16 04:32 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ga-unicorn.livejournal.com
I'm assuming you mean me. :)

I don't mind if you download stuff; I tend to put stuff on my Nook nowadays myself. And I love reviews whenever I get them. Hope you enjoy my work enough to leave one.

Date: 2012-09-21 02:54 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
Thank you for understanding. I can't wait to dive in. Ninja says they're Awesome and I'm inclined to believe.

I skimmed the list and it feels like Christmas!

Put your seat belt on, her fics are AWESOME!!

Date: 2012-09-21 02:51 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
Whoohoo!! Thanks for the rec. It's scary looking for fic these days.

Date: 2012-09-22 04:47 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ninja007.livejournal.com
I've also loved Kriadydragon (aka StealthDragon on ff.net) and Kodiak Bear Country (she does have some mcshep, so becareful). Awesome fic writers. SGAFan, obsessed1o1, coolbreeze1 and Titans5 all write some terrific stories too.

Date: 2012-09-16 12:44 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] imbecamiel.livejournal.com
LOL. Pfft, yep. About how these things go. XP

And these are the kinds of people who describe a fic - which they've written for a gen prompt, as "mostly gen anyway"... when the whole climax of the story, and solution to its difficulties, involves invitations to a threesome, complete with random, absurdly abrupt, making out in front of another character. Mmmhmmm...

Date: 2012-09-16 12:51 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] black-raven135.livejournal.com
and many times no warning...........and when you bring it to their attention, they either don't reply or they say e.g. "can't you just overlook that part?"
Not when it is noncon, gang rape etc.
Of course I was also asked to 'overlook that part' when I offered to beta for SGA Big Bang....I finally had had enough and pulled my offer much to the
dislike of the moderator. Tough, I specified NO slash

Date: 2012-09-16 06:53 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ninja007.livejournal.com
Yep. They see nothing wrong with it. I hate that!!

Date: 2012-09-16 12:59 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
I hate using fic finder unless it's a specific fic I'm looking for (although even then I still dislike using them). It seems like it doesn't matter how much you emphasize that you only want gen, they still give you slash.

Date: 2012-09-16 01:33 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] black-raven135.livejournal.com
My friend Mary Ann, who is a prolific like you but in M7, told me Criminal Minds would fit this request
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One episode was all I needed of that show and I quit.
Not really surprised that fandom would reflect this type of request.

Date: 2012-09-16 01:36 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
I like Criminal Minds but my foray into that fandom was short lived. The pickings were incredibly slim.

Date: 2012-09-16 04:12 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] phoenixi77.livejournal.com
I agree with you..I thought with 7 seasons of CM, there should be more fic out there...I wont even mind slash or het..but most of the time they are kidnapping, rape, non-con, mpreg..all that I like to avoid...

Date: 2012-09-16 04:27 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
The rape fic, oh my word. I couldn't believe how much rape fic there was :/ I'm usually neither here nor there about rape fic but there was just so much of it that I eventually gave up on looking for more fic. I hate it when certain tropes end up taking over a fandom.

Date: 2012-09-16 04:39 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] phoenixi77.livejournal.com
One other thing I have seen is that in almost all of the fics, in which one of the characters is kidnapped, the criminals have set up live/recording of video, with torture/rape etc...And the FBI/NCIS/police are not able to track them...seriously? all the kidnappers have such excellent computer skills!! no one can hack them...

So true. ROFL

Date: 2012-09-16 03:40 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
I am seriously amazed that the request for stories you would think couldn't possibly exist because they are so out there get, like, ten replies.

Date: 2012-09-16 03:21 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
Sad but oh so true. Your entry above made me laugh because it's highly accurate.

On a side note: I just wish gen could get the same respect that other genres get. Instead there seems to be a growing number of fics marked gen that clearly aren't. :( I mean that's why we have the various categories and tags, right? So people who are looking to read a certain kind of story will find it. i.e. If the author writes a fic containing slash elements, their target audience probably won't find it if it's marked gen. Likewise, a gen reader who reads same fic comes to the non-gen parts and abruptly stops reading. Either way, your fic is not going to be enjoyed by either party and all of the author's hard work is for naught. Just a thought.

I've been burned so many times trying to read new fic by authors I don't know, who either don't mark the story or mark it gen when it's not. Therefore I've limited myself to only those I know for a FACT write gen. (The drawback to this is when they move on to a new fandom...It means my choices begin to dwindle)

Sorry I got so far off topic.

Yes! This! So much this! I'm always saying this - labeling isn't just about warning people, it's also about advertisement. If you want to get more readers, more reviews, then aim for the correct target audience. If you let people know what they're about to read, they will come, so to speak.

*Nods* I just wish everyone understood this. It would make for so much less aggravation.

Yeah, that annoys me especially about AO3 - too many people seem to think that "they don't have sex means it's gen". Especially confusing are those stories which a labeled as gen but have a slash pairing tag listed. Sometimes they actually are gen, but why the hell using a pairing tag then? I don't get it, what's so difficult about tagging a fic properly.

Date: 2012-09-21 03:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
(Sorry about the late reply) but yeah. I don't get it either. Tends to get really frustrating.

This exact same thing is also a given in the Sherlock fandom. I tried to find gen fic in a Sherlock comm once, but eventually gave up because 95% of stories tagged gen were actually slash. Sometimes I think fandoms have different definitions of what gen actually means.

They either don't know what 'gen' means or just really don't care. A lot of them treat 'gen' like a free space on a bingo card, a blank check or a wild card....anything goes (and usually does). 0.o

Arrived here via [livejournal.com profile] gentable's friendlist and just wanted to express my complete agreement and amusement. I wind up reading a lot of slash simply because there's so much of it, but I vastly prefer gen and it's so hard to find, in every fandom.

Date: 2012-09-21 04:04 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] novembersga.livejournal.com
Welcome! If you check out the fic list of some of the authors who responded here, and the author of the original post they all write gen. Some very very awesome gen. Some write in multiple fandoms. I'm sure they can rec more.

I'm only in the SGA fandom but if you're interested let me know and I will put my list together for you to peruse at your leisure. Kriadydragon writes multiple fandoms including Merlin

Date: 2012-09-21 06:24 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] luxorien.livejournal.com
Hey, thanks! I will definitely check some of them out. I've got my head stuck firmly in the Merlin fandom at the moment. Always nice to find some new sources for gen stuff.

Date: 2012-09-21 06:55 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com
I wind up reading a lot of slash simply because there's so much of it,

I get that temptation. I'll admit I caved to the school of thought in which "I'll just skip over the slashy/romantic bits", and mostly regretted it as those bits will come out of nowhere, and you still need to read at least a couple of sentences to know where the bits are to skip, so it's mostly a lesson in futility.

I'm really hoping [livejournal.com profile] gentable picks up eventually (and I see you made a request, which makes me so happy :D). I have a similar comm in the White Collar fandom and it has been awesome - so many great gen fic have been written. But we need more people offering prompts (so if you know any fellow Merlin fans looking for gen fic, I'd be so happy if you'd spread the word).

<3 [livejournal.com profile] gentable. Will be checking back often. As a hermit, I don't really have anyone to spread word to, lol. But I will mention it everywhere I can. :)
