I need a little help from anyone who is from Ireland, or who's been to Ireland, or who knows barrel-loads about Ireland. Specifically where geography is concerned.

I'm getting ready to write a fantasy story that takes place in a made up little town/village with a population well below the hundreds and that's pretty much out in the middle of nowhere - a place that's only around because the area is popular with campers - and I need this tiny town to be located somewhere where there are mountains (or hills), forest and it's near the sea. My google-fu (which normally sucks) has confirmed that there are plenty of places to choose from but, well, it can still only tell me so much. I don't want to, for example, place by made-up town so many miles north/south/east/west from this real town or that real city, only for the location to, in reality, be a national park or forest-light or nothing but fields or something.

So, basically what I need is a general location in which it would be safe to place my little made-up town. It doesn't have to be specific - saying in the north/south-east/west by so-and-so Bay or near the city/town of so-and-so will be fine and I can do the rest of the needed research from there.

It's very important to the plot that it's in an area with mountains, forest and near the sea (as in only a few minutes drive from a bay or beach) if possible. But if that's not viable then a river or lake will do.

The help would be much appreciated.

Don't know much about Ireland, but perhaps you could do a visual search using Google Earth?

Pacific NW? there is a lot of wide open space
around here and can be close to the beach as well
as the lovely mountains and evergreens

The story takes place in Ireland so that won't really work :/

My apologies, guess I got carried away with the thought
of what a terrific setting PNW would be for it

You could try somewhere in County Kerry - it's got the Atlantic and the River Shannon bordering it and plenty of mountains/hills.

Maybe here? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baile_an_Fheirt%C3%A9araigh
