kriadydragon: (Obi-Wan)
Somewhere down the line my body has decided to be a complete and utter wuss. This summer I had two migraines that took place within only days of each other - I normally get a migraine a year - this fall I got the cough from hell that wouldn't go away, and just when it finally clears up after nearly two months, I get the flu. It's not a bad flu - I didn't wake up feeling worse and actually feel a little better today - but, dang it, I don't usually get sick this much!

All I can figure is that it's either because we have so many people living in the house now - my brother and his family - and though they're an easy-going bunch it can still be stressful at times (especially where the bathroom is concerned. We only have one). Or it's because I now work in the nursery at church, which means being around a lot of little kids who haven't learned to cover their mouths when they cough. We try to keep it a germ free environment but, again, no mouth-covering when kids cough, and some of the kids are still at that age where they like to put things in their mouths. I'm definitely thinking it's the latter.

Oh well. Maybe it'll mean a stronger immune system :/

Probably a combination. New preschool teachers and medical interns get exposed to a LOT of unfamiliar yuck, and the idea of a "germ-free environment" at a preschool is a joke. Stress makes everything worse. And yes, maybe it will strengthen your immune system in the long run. My dad is a doctor, and he almost never gets sick...anymore.

I just hope a strengthened immune system doesn't mean an illness every month. I doubt I could take it for too long :/

Chickenpox - got it at 14 from Vacation Bible School kids. Apparently my age group missed it the first time around. Not a happy camper!

Of the many things I don't miss about being in school, getting sick all the time was one of them. I was incredibly prone to the flu in my elementary days, especially the stomach flu.

"....Or it's because I now work in the nursery at church, which means being around a lot of little kids..."

I vote for the working around little incubators......ie kids
I know my friends who have kids in school are sick all the time.........

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking it is. I just hope this doesn't become a regular thing or I may have to quit.

I hate to break the news to you. You either have to wear one of those masks like they do for contagion care
:D
or quit because it is part and parcel of caring for those little two footed balls of energy.

Oh, I don't think it's that bad. I've worked in the nursery before and never got sick. I think it's more a matter that it's been so long since I've gotten sick that my immune system isn't quite up to par (I don't get out and about much). Plus it's not a daycare center in that we don't have a lot of kids - nine for the most part, and most of them will be moving on to the older classes, soon.

Aww, sorry to hear that. It stinks when it seems like you no sooner recover from one thing than you're coming down with another. :(

It does seem like working with young kids more particularly contributes to getting sick frequently. Soooo many times when they'll be sitting in your lap, wanting to cuddle, and only tell you after ten minutes or so that they've been feeling horrible all week... XD Nef and I actually came down with croup a while back. I can't remember getting that even when we were little, but now... heh.

Yeah, and the thing is that sometimes you're sick and don't even realize it. I thought for sure I just had allergies when I started feeling bad, then came the body aches, then came the rebellious stomach. I just hope I didn't accidentally spread it, not knowing what it really was :S

Heh. Yeah, allergies do make that particularly difficult, because it's so easy to initially discount something as just an allergy flare-up. And you certainly don't want to start "crying wolf" and declaring yourself ill every time the stupid allergies vary a bit... but at the same time don't want to be inconsiderate in ignoring things until you've already infected others. :P

Forgot to mention how I can relate.
When I was teaching English in a middle school in Turkey I picked up TB. It was a normal thing to ask the classroom where was so and so was and the reply would be e.g "sanitarium"
Fortunately we lived in a town where the doctor, a Turk,
had returned from US where he had gone through medical school, internship and residency at John Hopkins
He treated my case at home, but odd thing was when he checked my roommate, she was not contagious.
