*Gibbers a hundred miles per hour insanely. Clears throat!*
Yeah, sorry.
I'm done! Recent original not-fanfic-at-all story is done! and my wrists hurt so bad now! It's pretty much been an almost non-stop finish to the end, which I thought for sure wouldn't happen until next week. The climax and the denouement I thought for sure would be the toughest parts to write, and they were, but by then I had reached the point of "I can edit it later I just want to get this done!" and I managed to push through instead of writing a few paragraphs then having to stop, which has pretty much been the story of this story. Some weeks I was lucky to get two pages done. And until something else comes along that proves to be harder, I'm deeming this story the hardest thing I've written, evah! (And it's ironic because, as of right now - though this will change, I already know it - this is the shortest story I've written, barely coming over 200 pages. Which, yes, is short for me, trust me).
I've mentioned before in other posts how this story was a lot more character driven than past stories, and I believe that's why it was so difficult. Lots of complicated situations, complicated emotions, and that made for complicated characters that were rather tricky to write. I would get hung up on a lot of small stuff. For example, how character A should respond to what character B said, as in what he should say exactly, what character A's opinion of this minor little detail is, and so on. I'm a very "get as much right as possible the first time around" kind of writer, and as much as I would like to breeze through things and come back later and work out the details during editing, those minor details - from what a character says to how they say it (a lot of the problem was dialogue, you see) - are what helps me figure the characters out and makes the editing process go a lot smoother.
Thing is, this is the story I plan on making a sort-of series. And now I have to wonder what I've gotten myself into. But my hope is that now that I know this characters that the future stories in this universe will be a lot more cooperative. I already have the next story in mind, but I don't plan on writing it next. I'm in the mood for something fun and want to try my hand at a bit of comedy. After that, I may then revisit this world and write the next book.
But first... *passes out in relief*

Date: 2013-07-07 06:27 am (UTC)From:Although I also have to wonder if the reason this story was being difficult was because the story I actual wanted to write was book two, which of course I couldn't do until I wrote book one. Thoughts of book two were often what helped keep me going at times.

Date: 2013-07-09 12:59 pm (UTC)From:I seem to remember a story you had posted the first chapter or two of a long time ago that I REALLY liked - I want to say the title had Dragon in it, but I might be mixing that up. The main character was Jace I think, or something like that. Anyway, I really liked what you had on that one. Any chance it's still around?

Date: 2013-07-09 10:03 pm (UTC)From:once I've research ancient history for another decade.)I'm trying to re-write an (extremely) AU fanfic I wrote hundreds of thousands of words, and turn it original. And what you said about reaching the "I can edit it later I just want to get this done!" mindset is totally where I need to be. So yes...you totally are an inspiration to buckle down. ;D

Heh, I only managed to get that mindset toward the end of the story. The rest of the time I was all "Yay, I got a page done! Time to go play video games!" ^^;
I should write a major AU fanfic and then turn it into original fic. I bet I'd get it done faster. Fanfic is so much easier to write.
