The problem with me and short stories is that it's difficult for me to come up with a short story without it wanting to turn into something long and involved. Or without it becoming some sort of id fic that pushes all my buttons but otherwise is barely a story at all.

So I would adore some prompts for an original short story. A trope or idea you'd like to see written (for example, dragon and knight setting aside their differences because it's tea time... or something). As usual with me and prompts, I can't promise that they'll be written, or that the prompt idea won't morph inside my head into something entirely different. But I do love prompts, and would really like some more short-story ideas to write.

So prompt me :D Fantasy and sci-fi ideas especially. I also like steampunk.

You should do a story about a dragon observing humans as though it were the narrator of a nature documentary. Imagine, the dragon has captured a princess for study, not to eat her or for plunder. It is confused and trying to figure out what exactly the humans are. Of course, its intentions are grossly misunderstood. Perhaps the dragon would get out of the problem through more civilized means than flaming and violence.

I would love to read a story about someone out for a late night walk (or like me, walking their dog late when the world is quiet) to look up wondering if the noises they are hearing is a dragon (I like dragons) roosting in the trees...or something.

I often look up at night and imagine things. If a helicopter goes by I think its Sheppard. ;)

I love whimsey stories. Not necessarily 'sweet' , but those that have a whimsical feel to them.

Oh yes. I love stories that have a kind of fairy-tale vibe without being an actual fairy tale. Like Coraline, The Night Circus or Howl's moving Castle. Stories that think outside the fantasy box but without being heavy-handed about it.

Which is why I like your idea. I'm already trying to combine it with my desire to write something touching on imaginary friends that may not be imaginary.

I would LOVE to see you write something about the interstellar animal shelter that you mentioned in my journal! That's such a great idea. :D It could have all kinds of weird alien creatures. Perhaps, among all the exotic alien animals, someone finds an animal that we consider commonplace (a cat?) that is thought to be extinct in their future time, so it's the most exotic one of all!
