Dial-up is still being a turtle and making me want to choke it and still my sister's laptop because, for some reason, it works better on her computer. I may have to do that. It took me three flippin' hours yesterday to upload my recent fic plus a picture, and I had many an imaginary throttle of my computer during the process.
After more woe concerning SGA, it got me thinking about episodes I would have liked to have seen (and hope they show before the season is over). That, in turn, led me to an idea for a possible ficathon or maybe a challenge for a community all ready in existence. Mostly I was doing this for fun, but decided to get opinions on it.
Basically, I was thinking of a ficathon/challenge centered around virtual episodes - namely episodes we would have liked to have seen. Not episodes we would've rather seen happen this way, or stuff we wanted to have happen despite the fact that SGA wasn't that kind of show (Ex. blood and guts/rated R or NC-17 style torture, McKay confessing his undying love to Sheppard, massive amounts of swearage etc.) I mean episodes the show could have done, should have done but didn't or haven't done yet. For example (and this is just a random, cliche idea) the team ends up prisoners and part of a chain gang on some planet... or something. Or McKay is out of commission to it's up to Zelenka or even Chuck to save the day.
But isn't that what fanfic is all about - writing our own wish fulfilling episodes? Well, from what I gather about virtual episodes is that, basically, they have to be as canon as you can possibly make them. In other words - make them actual episodes, just in words. Which means no non-canon pairings, no AUs, no rating above PG-13, no massive amounts of swearing, no blood and guts and gore whump, etc. Granted, much of this is left up to the eye of the beholder, but some things are pretty obvious: we've seen both Stargate shows get pretty violent, but both keep there language beneath the Sh- and F-bomb.
I imagine it working something like this (should two people come up with the same idea): you have an idea for an episode you hoped the SGA writers would whip up. You sign up, giving your name and a summary of your idea, as well as which character this story will be centered around. We'll use the chain-gang idea. You want this to be McKay centered but a McKay/Sheppard friendship piece. Someone else has a similar idea - chain-gang, McKay/Sheppard friendship and McKay centered. However, since you got to the idea first, it goes to you. However again, if that person wants to make it Sheppard centered, or Shep-centric and a team fic plus the chain-gang slave plot, then it's a go.
So it's basically first come/first serve if two people happen to have the same idea. Other than that, it would be all about writing stories that read like an actual episode.
And that's all I've got for this idea so far. There would be a deadline, of course - for signups and when posting begins/ends. Length of stories... mmmm, I haven't really decided how to tackle this. And episode-like story you couldn't really tackle as a one-shot, but neither does it necessarily have to be anything novel length.
Like I said, it's just an idea I'm toying with, just for fun, and may not be something I'll pursue. It may not even be something that can be pursued, I don't know. I just want to hear what you all think: whether it sounds like an awesome idea, completely stupid, or okay but maybe I should go about it another way. Let me know what you think.

Date: 2008-08-24 05:59 am (UTC)From:Virtual season 6? As in a community, something all fanficcers will be doing or something the creatores of SGA will be doing? I've heard of virtual seasons, but I'm not sure, exactly, what they are.
Part of the process of thinking up this maybe-ficathon was wanting to write more canon-compliant fic myself. I've been getting too into AUs and majorly angst-heavy and dark pieces, and wanted to do more of the kind of stuff we'd actually see on the show. It's become kind of a self-challenge for me and then I thought "Hey, why not get others in on this, it might be fun." So... yeah, we'll see.

That's typically the rule....stick to canon but as you know this fandom is HUGE. So, if you want to see something done....you know the old saying.
I for one plan on writing a LOT now.....and I applaud anything that is canon strict....though I have four fics I've got planned now..lol

Date: 2008-08-28 02:29 am (UTC)From: (Anonymous)I too feel it's more and more difficult to locate gen stories. There are so many slash stories and pairings. (I don't read slash and pairings aren't really my thing either) So please DO THIS! Pretty-pretty please.
The chain gang idea sounded pretty cool. Maybe one of you talented writers will pick this plot-bunny up and run with it. (I don't see Teyla out there, but the guys....Sheppard, Ronon & Rodney? Yeah. (LOL)
Where do I find these virtual seasons of SGA. It sounds interesting but I don't know where to find it. Does anyone have a link or a web address?
Thanks!!
