But this one I definitely want to do... that is, if one doesn't already exist.

Whumper's Guide - a community to post medical information, links to medical information, specific medical questions that are difficult to research, discussions on whump and H/C... basically anything and everything to aid us whumpers in bettering our whump/H-C, whether for fanfic or original fiction.

I came up with this when thinking about (and do ask my why I was thinking about this) when people post medical tid-bits on Sheppard HC or elsewhere to help expand us whumper's horizons and I thought "why not just have a single community dedicated to that?"

Would that be something you other whumpers feel would be useful? Would it be something you'd use - not just to research but also to share what you research? Plus discuss whump - what you find works, what doesn't work, why we like whump, Hurt Vs. Comfort... whatever as long as it has to do with whump.

However, if such a community already exists, then please ignore this post except to tell me it exists.

hey, what about a bigger research community, and you could have a zillion tags for different things people have researched (that would be easily searchable). like military ranks and promotion guidelines, and helicopter specs, and stuff about guns, or even, like, 19th century slang for that Old West AU where Sheppard is totally a gunslinger ... (what? he's a quick draw, it's canon!)

I really like the idea of a medical information community. It would be nice to have a place to post questions. I'm sure there are a lot of times when I've had a question about the effects of such-and-such an injury/illness or such-and-such treatment that other people have already researched and know the answer to.

The tricky part maybe would be how to organize it so you can find the information you're looking for...it's a good idea though.

And I can't tell you how thrilled I've been in the last year or two to discover that I'm not alone when it comes to whumping my favorite characters. I had no idea there were people like me out there!!

Maybe organize by a tag system with tags for both body parts affected (skin, bone, legs, lungs, head, etc.) and method/type of whump (burns, arrows, cut, stab, infection, allergy, malnutrition, etc.)

It would be a great resource for writers I would imagine to have a central place to go to research injuries and complications, along with treatment and side effects of such treatment(s). Duration of recovery, physical therapy etc.

Excellent idea.

Cool idea! Could I also suggest that those of us who have backgrounds in certain areas also post our areas of expertise? For example, I'm working on my PhD in genetics, and have a background in cell biology and mycology (fungi) and worked as a lab tech for a few years - I can tell you what PCR does, what you can see with electron microscopy, and how gene therapy might work for those curious and needing details.

I don't think one com exists for this..there are websites dedicasted to this --b ut I don't think they are updated.

Deepbackground was for X-Files Writers for Whumping Mulder-

http://www.keleka.net/deepbackground/resources/medical/medical.htm

There's a military LJ for asking questions that I've used before.
[livejournal.com profile] military_beta.

Also there is a yahoo-email gropuis called fanfic-med where you ask medcial people questions about injuries and other medcial stuff.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fanfic_med/

But as you said...nothing under one roof..I don't think. Good idea!

Yes! That would be great. I'm constantly doing research for my original works so that I don't accidentally put a character in a medically incurable situation and then have him or her wander away like nothing happened when they should be lying dead on the floor. Having a resource like that, geared specifically towards writers, would be just fantastic, and in all my research I have yet to stumble across one.

Sounds like a terrific idea. Sign me up!

When I've got a medical question I either go to the fanfic_med yahoo group or ask a fandom friend who is a medical professional.

I have no idea if a fanfic-oriented medical question lj comm exists, but I would love for there to be one-- personally, I find lj comms more accessible than yahoo groups due to their better organizational structure. No digging through threads of topics I don't want to read.

I wouldn't want a general "everything whumpish" community though. I would keep 'howtowhump' (medical discussion), 'findwhumphere' (whump fic posting/recs), and 'ilikewhump' (discussion of likes, squicks, and literary technique with regards to whump) separate, with links to each other in the profiles. Personally, I think research, stories, and general squee/discussion of preferences are actually three very different reasons to visit a comm, and when I am looking for one thing I don't want to be distracted by the other.

Also, having multiple communities makes it easier to find things in a busy comm-- with word spread to multiple fandoms, you could end up with many posts per day. Think big. It's easier than suddenly having to reorganize when the comm grows beyond expected dimensions.

That would be totally awesome!!! Sometimes I spend forever researching medical stuff and really never find my answer. There is a fanfic medical group I get postings from, but it's a very mixed bag of stuff and even if there was something usable in one of the postings, I'd never be able to find it again. I like the idea of a community where we could tag things so a person could find it when they needed it.
