'Tis a fine Independance day it is. We went to Borders, did a little shopping. It was both a pleasure and a torment. As the title says - so many books, so little money. I wanted to get the next book in the Temeraire series, plus they have Indiana Jones adventure books that have caught my fancy. They also, finally, had this one book I saw two years back - an illustrated dark fantasy called Plucker - but it was twenty five bucks, as was this other book that caught my interest called The Somnabulent by Johnathan Barnes (it sounded like my cup of tea - odd - although the mention of "deformed hookers" kind of made me wary. Has anyone heard of this books? Read it? And if you have, is it something you'd recommend?). There was so much I wanted to get, but because I'm saving up for SGA season four plus need to ensure I have money to see Hell Boy and The Dark Knight, I was extremely limited in what I could get.
What I ended up getting was a Dr. Who book, just for something diferent. Since I can't watch the show, I'll read the book - and, yes, that actually is a motto of mine :D. I've decided that, should I like this book, to get a book every month. So for those of you who have read the books, are there any in particular you'd recommend? Or you'd recommend for me to stay away from?
And while I'm asking for recs and getting into Dr. Who via reading material (yes, I know it's not the same - it never is - but it's all I've got until I can either find the series on DVD or one day have enough money to get cable and Sci-fi. I'm limited, people! :(.) are there any Dr. who fanfiction stories you could recommend to me? Preferably with whump :D. You can even recommend your own if you've written any. I'd much appreciate it.
And so went my arduous Independance Day book-shopping adventure. Happy firework popping fourth everyone! :)

Date: 2008-07-05 01:07 am (UTC)From:I'll dig you out some links to some good fanfic too - though there's not much good (or whumpy!) stuff out there! It's mostly emo-teen shippy 10th/Rose reunion fic! :/
Oooh I know. Check out the 10th Doctor whump thread on GW (it's in the Doctor Who folder) - someone posted some links to some decent whumpy fics in there. And there's also my two 10th Doctor whump fics on my LJ (linked to in the fanfic archive).

Eww, porn ):P

I haven't really read ANY of the books, but incase you wanna watch the episodes, they're here. I, myself, haven't been using this site for long so I don't know if it has any the OLD series' on there somewhere.
I hear that you can go to another site aswell, but it is mainly for firefox users. This is what my dad uses. (we're all obssessed at my house!)

Last one, the one my brother uses is quite simple to use and to type.

Personally, I would use the top one, but the reason everyone in my house uses different sites is because we all have different needs and wants. Like I said, I don't know about the books, but I can help with the tv.

Whump Fics
Date: 2008-07-12 12:07 am (UTC)From: (Anonymous)First, I have to recommend Alipeeps' stories, if you haven't read them already. Good character development as well as whump, and, best of all, no romance.
Adalia Zandra (http://www.whofic.com/viewuser.php?uid=3435) is also an excellent whump writer, though she occasionally tends mildly towards ship. I would definitely suggest Sense, as it is absolutely full of mental and physical whump. Heat Tolerance, Loophole, and Snap are very episode-centric, and the others just never drew my attention.
If you're familiar with Firefly (or have read the wikipedia page, really) then read The Man With No Name (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3486089/1/The_Man_With_No_Name) by Frostfyre7. There is a phenomenal description of the Doctor's encounter with a Firefly-verse monster called a Reaver, and some great character moments. The ending culminates in a dramatic encounter with the story's bad guy.
I'm fond of Taking Charge (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4311410/1/Taking_Charge) as well, as it's whumpy and not shippy and showcases the awesomeness of Donna (who is the greatest thing to find in Doctor Who fanfiction, because her relationship with the Doctor is emphatically platonic and most writers stay true to that. Also, they snark.)
Monopoly's Out of the Cold (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=21039) has potential, but it is a work in progress and I don't see it being updated very often.
For the moment, that's actually all I can think of. Doctor Who fanfiction is tragically under-stocked when it comes to quality, well-written (and, yes, whump) stories. It would be amazing if you got into it; the fandom needs more writers like you to balance out the fluffy, shippy excess.
If I find more, I will let you know.
